From 'A Day to Wear Red'
‘The minister read a passage from the Good Book and they put the rope round her neck. May the Lord have mercy, then swoosh.’
‘Swoosh.’
‘The hanging was a grand affair. That was a day to wear red.’
‘Don’t be putting nightmares in the bairn’s head, mum. Come away Trinity, it’s time
for your bath before bed.’
‘But I want to hear the rest of the story. Why did they hang her?’
‘My mother was a spirited lass.’ Gran said.
‘They hang you for being spirited in Dunglaston?’
‘It was a long time ago. Things were different then.’
‘Enough of your nonsense.’ Mum hustled me towards the bathroom. ‘Make sure you wash behind your ears.’
