Privacy Policy for BankRate
Last updated: August 22, 2026
Effective date: August 22, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how BankRate (“we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information when you use our Android mobile application BankRate (the “App”), published under the package name com.bankrate.app. By installing or using the App, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
BankRate is an independent financial information and tools application. BankRate is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Bankrate.com or any other third-party financial publisher, except where we link to or display publicly available content from external sources.
1. Information We Collect
Information you provide. BankRate does not require you to create an account, sign in, or submit your name, email address, phone number, postal address, government ID, Social Security number, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, or other payment credentials. Calculator inputs (such as loan amounts, interest rates, or savings goals) are processed on your device to produce results and are not transmitted to our servers.
Information stored locally on your device. To improve your experience, the App may store the following data only on your device using local storage (Android DataStore and Room database):
Theme preference (light, dark, or system)
Whether you have completed onboarding
Items you bookmark or favorite (rates, calculators, articles, and products)
Your recent in-app search queries
Cached copies of publicly available financial rates and news articles, so content can load faster or be shown when connectivity is limited
This locally stored information remains on your device unless you clear the App’s data, uninstall the App, or use any in-app option to remove it (where available).
Information collected automatically. When you use features that load live data or news, the App connects to the internet. We do not operate our own user analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting SDKs in the current version of the App. However, when the App requests data from third-party services (described below), those providers may automatically receive standard technical information such as your IP address, device/browser user-agent string, request timestamps, and URLs requested, as part of normal network communication. We do not use this information to personally identify you.
Permissions. The App requests Internet and Network state permissions so it can fetch financial data and news and detect connectivity. The App does not request access to your contacts, camera, microphone, location, SMS, phone, photos, or files outside its own app storage.
2. How We Use Information
We use information as follows:
To display financial rates, market data, calculators, product listings, and news within the App
To remember your preferences (such as theme and onboarding status)
To save your bookmarks and recent searches for your convenience
To cache public content temporarily on your device for performance and offline resilience
To open external publisher websites when you choose Read full article or similar links
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data for targeted advertising in the current version of the App.
3. Third-Party Services and Content
BankRate relies on publicly available and licensed third-party sources to provide content. When you use the App, your device may communicate with services such as:
Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) — rate and market trend data
CalcFi — national average rate data
SwitchWize — financial product information
Google News (RSS) — financial news headlines and summaries
News publisher websites — when article details or images are loaded, or when you open a full article in your browser
Each third party has its own privacy practices. We encourage you to review their policies. We are not responsible for how third parties handle information once you leave the App or interact directly with their websites.
When you tap a link to an external website, that site may place cookies or collect information according to its own policy. BankRate does not control third-party websites.
4. Advertising (Google AdMob).
BankRate displays advertisements through Google AdMob. Google and its advertising partners may collect and use information to serve and measure ads, including: Android Advertising ID (AAID), IP address, device type and OS version, app interactions with ads (such as impressions and clicks), and general location inferred from IP address. This data may be used to show personalized or non-personalized ads, limit ad frequency, measure ad performance, and detect fraud. For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and other regions where required, we use Google’s User Messaging Platform (UMP) to obtain consent before personalized advertising where applicable. You can change ad personalization anytime in your device settings: Settings → Google → Ads → Opt out of Ads Personalization (wording may vary by device). Learn more at Google Privacy Policy and AdMob Help.
5. Data Sharing
We do not share, sell, rent, or trade your personal information with third parties for their marketing purposes.
Information may be disclosed only in these limited situations:
Service operation: Technical data is sent to the third-party APIs and websites listed above strictly so the App can function.
Legal requirements: If required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request.
Safety and rights: To protect the rights, property, or safety of users, the public, or BankRate, where permitted by law.
6. Data Retention
Locally stored data (preferences, bookmarks, searches, and cache) is kept on your device until you delete it or uninstall the App. Cached public content may be refreshed or overwritten automatically. We do not maintain a central database of your personal activity because the App does not require account registration.
7. Data Security
We use reasonable technical measures appropriate for a mobile application of this type, including secure HTTPS connections where supported by third-party endpoints and local on-device storage for user preferences. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your Choices and Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict certain processing of personal information.
Because BankRate stores most user-specific data locally on your device, you can generally:
Remove bookmarks and search history through in-app actions (where available)
Clear all App data via Android Settings → Apps → BankRate → Storage → Clear data
Uninstall the App to delete locally stored information
If you contact us (see Section 12), we will respond to reasonable privacy requests as required by applicable law.
9. Children’s Privacy
BankRate is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the App, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
10. International Users
If you use the App outside the United States, your information may be processed on your device locally, while network requests to third-party services may be handled in the United States or other countries where those providers operate. By using the App, you understand that such transfers may occur.
11. Financial Disclaimer
BankRate provides informational tools and publicly sourced data only. It is not financial, legal, tax, or investment advice. Calculator outputs are estimates. Rate and product information may change and may not reflect your individual eligibility or terms. Always verify information with official institutions and qualified professionals before making financial decisions.
12. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top. If changes are material, we may provide additional notice within the App. Continued use of the App after an update means you accept the revised policy.
