Instrument fair: Band

We are glad you are interested in becoming part of the band! In order to be part of the band, students must select an instrument. The instrument selection will determine to which class period the student will be assigned and thus, affect the student’s schedule.

Becoming part of the band in middle school is a four-step process.

Step #1 is to review the Frequently Asked Questions information.

Step #2 is to review the instrument videos.

This is a very important step. While we hope that each child will be able to play his or her “first choice” instrument, physical characteristics and the need for balanced instrumentation are limiting factors. Students should carefully watch each video and consider which instruments they like best. In the next step, students will rank their interest in these instruments by instrument family (woodwind, high brass, low brass), 1st choice – 3rd choice. Students interested in percussion should select a wind instrument and then tryout with a percussion specialist when the school year begins.

Step #3 is to fill out and submit the Instrument Interest Form.

Click on the button below to access the Band Instrument Interest form. Students will need to rank their interest in an instrument by instrument family (woodwind, high brass, low brass) by putting them in order, 1st choice through 3rd choice. Students interested in percussion should select a wind instrument and then tryout with a percussion specialist when the school year begins. Oboe and Bassoon will also be assigned once the school year begins.

Step #4 is a student/parent conference with a band director.

After you submit your interest form, you will be contacted by a band director to discuss your instrument interests and determine the instrument your child will play. The band director will then work with school counselors to assign your child to the appropriate class period. If your child would like to “tryout” for percussion in August, you can let the band director know during your conference.
