This unique storytelling experience has the ultimate goal of ensuring that each child knows that they are worthy and that they belong. Through song and storytelling, participants will leave this presentation feeling empowered!

The First Poet Laureate of Charleston, SC Marcus Amaker

Marcus Amaker, Charleston's first Poet Laureate, will discuss how poetry is a tool for honesty & healing in South Carolina. He'll read some of his original poetry and share the words of students. Marcus will also show photos of events and give examples of poetry prompts to help students of all ages write their truth.

Connection to My World Using Adinkra Symbols with Saudah N. T. Collins

Have you ever heard of Adinkra symbols? Adinkra symbols originated in West Africa and represent special values such as cooperation, beauty, freedom, patience, and safety…just to name a few! During this recorded session, participants will learn about the origin of Adinkra symbols and how they can be used to make connections related to the way we live and interact with others in the world. Through songs, a book, and interactive maps, participants will learn about Adinkra symbols.

Building Community at the Most Haunted House in America

Author, drummer, and librarian Jarrett Dapier will read his new picture book, "The Most Haunted House In America," based on his experience drumming at the White House in 2009 when the Obamas opened the gates to 2,500 local schoolchildren and grown-ups in celebration of Halloween. He will talk about how public libraries, parks, and events like the one hosted by the Obamas at what was once called "the people's house" encourages communal respect, anti-racism, and a love of diversity.

We Are Stronger Together: A Trauma-Informed Storytime

Building upon the trauma-informed care principles primarily utilized in social work services, this unique storytime will focus on self-awareness and positive relationship building through the telling of inclusive children's books!
