Ovu Manuvu is one of the oldest tribes in Davao City. "Ovu" means "people" and "manuvu" means dialect. They are known for their fine weaponry and jewelry, and their main livelihoods are cacao and vegetable farming. They can be found in all highlands areas north of the Tammuhan (now Tamugan) River and west Davao. In particular, these areas are Magsaysay, Dalag, Lumot, Salaysay, Marilog Proper, Santol, Malamba, Suawan, Tamugan, Tambobong, Carmen, Cadalian, Tawan-tawan, Wines, Baguio, Malagos, and Gumalang. Indeed, as of this time, these areas are heavily populated by Ovu Manuvu.
THE HISTORY OF ITS NAME
WHY OVU-MANUVUย ?
๐๐๐จ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ฎ' is the spelling used by the Kidapawan City History and Heritage Research Team for the name of the tribe indigenous to the city.ย
The spelling follows the Monuvu orthography of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, which was designed by tribal leaders and which seeks to represent the language's phonology as accurately as possible.ย
'๐๐จ๐ง๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ฎ' is how members of the tribe refer to their culture. The /v/ sound is a unique feature of the language.ย
The first vowel is pronounced /ษ/, the vowel in the English word 'not'.ย
'๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ถ๐ท๐ถ,' the spelling used by anthropologist E. Arsenio Manuel, ๐๐จ๐๐ฌ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฏ๐จ๐ฐ๐๐ฅ.
'๐v๐จ' is also used as a qualifier to be more specific.
ย This is to distinguish the tribe from related sub-tribes like the Tinananen Monuvu in the Arakan valley, or from other cultures that are also called 'Monuvu/ 'Manuvu'/ 'Menuvu'/ 'Manobo' (such as the Agusan Manobo or the Dulangan Manobo)
'Obo' is an exonym, a word from the language of the neighbouring Tagabawa culture.ย
Because the Tagabawa language does NOT contain the /v/ sound, spellings of 'Obo' which contain it - '๐๐ท๐ถ,' '๐๐ท๐ฐ,' '๐๐ท๐ฐ,' '๐๐ท๐ถ' - are inaccurate and ๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐.ย
ย '๐๐ฃ๐ฐ ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ฃ๐ฐ' is the spelling most common in extant literature.ย
But it is an adjustment to the limitations of Settler languages, which do not contain the /v/ sound. As such it may be seen as
The Obo Monuvu are indigenous to the Greater Kidapawan Area and parts of Davao. While we have no Tokaan over how those in other areas may choose to spell the tribe's name, we strongly encourage those in Kidapawan to follow ๐๐๐จ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ฎ as spelling.ย
