Safety equipment is generally viewed as vital to sports, as it is the assurance that participants in any particular activities do not undergo any harm. Therefore, many organizations have implemented standards regulating the safety in equipment that is allowed to be sold to consumers. In the field of equestrian sports, organizations uphold safety by providing a standard to which helmets that are sold must adhere. However, the law does not require that helmets fall under any American lateral crushing standard, so it is important to develop the ASTM’s standards to match the rest of the world. Even countries with standards do not base them off of legitimate situational evidence. A head form will be designed and eventually tested to develop lateral crushing standards by providing a testing process for future helmets, including values based on injuries horse jockeys might undergo. This will require data to be collected from the created head form and the use of high intensity test machinery to collect lateral crushing data for helmets tested. Ultimately, this project will lead to the creation of an ASTM standard by future researchers and will allow the United States to join the rest of the world in regulating helmets for lateral crushing.
