A beep is a short, single tone, typically high-pitched, generally made by a computer or other machine. The term has its origin in onomatopoeia. The word "beep-beep" is recorded for the noise of a car horn in 1929, and the modern usage of "beep" for a high-pitched tone is attributed to Arthur C. Clarke in 1951.[1]

In some computer terminals, the ASCII character code 7, bell character, outputs an audible beep. The beep is also sometimes used to notify the user when the BIOS is not working or there is some other error during the start up process, often during the power-on self-test (POST).[2] A beep is also made when holding down too many keys at the same time, as the computer often cannot handle the processes.

The command-line interfaces of the ReactOS, PTS-DOS,[3] SISNE plus,[4] and AROS[5] operating systems include a beep command.A beep command is also part of ASCII's MSX-DOS2 Tools for MSX-DOS version 2.[6]

Beeps are also used as a warning when a truck, lorry or bus is reversing. It can also be used to define the sound produced by a car horn. Colloquially, beep is also used to refer to the action of honking the car horn at someone, (e.g., "Why did that guy beep at me?"), and is more likely to be used with vehicles with higher-pitched horns. "Honk" is used if the sound is lower pitched (e.g. Volkswagen Beetles beep, but Oldsmobiles honk.[citation needed] On trains, beeps may be used for communications between members of staff.[1]

A beep is also a colloquialism for a zip tone to indicate a telephone call coming in on the same phone line as someone is currently speaking, either on a landline or mobile phone. The call waiting feature often outputs an audible "beep" noise to indicate that there is a second call coming in.

As a noun, the practice of "beeping" in sub-Saharan Africa refers to the cell phone phenomenon during which a person dials a number but immediately cancels the call before it is answered in order to elicit a call back from the recipient. One reason for this practice is to elicit a recipient to call back when the caller has almost run out of prepaid units for his/her cell phone but still wants or needs to talk to the recipient. In Rwanda, this practice has evolved into an art for courting between men and women, where women "beep" males in order to elicit a call back, which manifests the man's interest and willingness to pay for the woman's call. At times, this practice can be an inconvenience for the recipient, and at times, people ignore the "beeps." "Beeping" is also known as "flashing" in sub Saharan Africa, and is known as "menacing" or "fishing" in Indonesia.[7]

The use of profanity and offensive language on free-to-air broadcasts in the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Japan is sometimes censored by replacing the profane word or phrase with an audible beep(s), often accompanied by obscuring the speaker's mouth to prevent lip-reading. If there is a closed captioning, the word is commonly replaced by asterisks, used as a mixture of letters and asterisks, or "[bleep]" is used.

When films are edited for daytime/nighttime TV, broadcasters may prefer not to bleep swearing, but cut out the segment containing it, replace the speech with different words, or cover it with silence or a sound effect.[citation needed]

On live TV shows, broadcasters prefer to mute the sound to censor profanity rather than bleep over it.[7] This was already the case in March 2022, when American television broadcasters muted the sound during a live broadcast of the Oscars after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock and shouted "Keep my wife's name out your fucking mouth!".[8] Nevertheless, the complete verbal exchange between Smith and Rock was broadcast uncensored in other countries like Japan, Australia, and Argentina.[9]

A Barnardo's ad, released in summer 2007, has two versions: one where a boy can be heard saying "fuck off" four times which is restricted to "18" rated cinema screenings, and one where a censor bleep sound obscures the profanity which is still restricted to "15" and "18" rated films.[11] Neither is permitted on UK television.

Trailers for programs containing swearing are usually bleeped until well after the watershed, and it is very rare for any trailer to use the most severe swear words uncensored.[citation needed]

You need to replace the A note with the name of the column in your conditions file that contains your sound file names, preceded by a $ symbol to indicate that you are using a variable name rather than a literal value.

How to you turn off or turn down the beep sound on a Panasonic GX85. I just got the camera and the beep is really loud. I looked at the menu items,e.g., wrench icons, but no obvious item shows up related to focus lock beep sound. I am sure it has to be controllable, but can't find the way. I appreciate the help. If you look in the menu that just has a wrench, you will find the word beep. Select that and you can adjust the volume or turn it off completely, which is what I do on all of my cameras. You can also adjust the electronic shutter sound... choose the one you want and make it loud or silent, again what I do.

The LowePro PhotoSport Outdoor is a camera pack for photographers who also need a well-designed daypack for hiking and other outdoor use. If that sounds like you, the PhotoSport Outdoor may be a great choice, but as with any hybrid product, there are a few tradeoffs.

Hello, I'm trying to bleep out a few sentences but I'm having trouble finding the right tutorial or instructions. Can anyone point me in the right direction of bleeping out words using Premiere Pro CC?

I have HP dm3 laptop and windows 7 installed on it. There is some beep for a 0.5 seconds periodically. There is no regularity. I did not found nothing suspicious in evets log. There is nothing suspicious in processes running on a machine. There is also avg 2012 anitvirus installed. My question is, how can I trace who is sending that signal. Which software do I need for this purpose or which functions to use in c/c++/c# to write a program by myself. I know for sure that this sound comes from sound card and not from pc-speaker.

I like to add a beep sound to my VI, I tried two methods, one is to use Kernel32 Dll beep, another is to use beep.vi, however, none of them worked on labview 2015. I used both of them on older labview version prior to 2010. I do not know why they do not work on 2015.

What happened when you tried (on your system) to run the one-function VI I posted? I'm pretty sure it should have worked ... Now, if it didn't make the kind of sound you wanted (i.e. if you wanted a different "beep" sound), then you stated the "problem" incorrectly, and your solution ("I wanted a particular .wav file to be played, but I didn't want to change the Windows setting for the "beep", so I simply played the .wav file that I wanted instead") is correct.

Hi, I often produce a Teams live event with thousands of attendees. I got lots of feedback from attendees that they heard beeps sounds during the Teams live event, and that's annoying. I guess the beeps sounds are from attendees sending questions in Q&A. Do you guys know how to turn off Q&A sounds for attendees?

Swearing, we all do it, but including profanities doesn't usually end up making good TV & video. Broadcasters certainly don't allow a selection of naughty words to be transmitted until a certain time at night. Keeping a profanity in an interview or speech might seem funny whilst editing, not so much when your five year-old nephew or 90 year old grandma watches.

Click on the audio component at the beginning and end of the section you want to bleep. This will add edits to the clip and isolate the offending word for us. Go back to the Select Tool by pressing A.

Sound effects can enhance your productivity in Microsoft Office by providing audio cues. For example, a sound cue might notify you when options on the screen change. Or, a sound can confirm that an action (such as send a mail, delete something, or paste content) actually completed.

I have a weird problem with a Canon MF227dw. Sometimes certain documents (mostly PDFs) do not print: the printer just beeps as it normally does after finishing printing, but with no other visible actions (e.g., sheets are not fed from the tray, and I don't hear the printer warming up). I'm using a Mac and I tried both from Preview and Adobe Reader. No error is displayed on the computer or the printer. I tried both with wireless printing and connecting the printer directly via USB. I tried restarting the printer and resetting the printing system on my Mac. It happens only on specific documents, and I found no way to print them on that printer. The same documents print on different printers (I tried on Xerox printers, HP and Toshiba) from the same computer. 2351a5e196
