You can always stop at any time. Also, if you or your baby feel uncomfortable during the lab visit.
No, EEG is completely safe. We only capture activity that is already detectable on the scalp. There is nothing harmful coming from the EEG.
Yes, that is possible. We can take a break and give you some privacy to do that if necessary.
We will try our best to distract and entertain your baby. If there is a sign of too much distress, we will not proceed with the EEG.
We are an international team and speak Dutch, Polish, Bulgarian, Italian, and English! We also have research assistants who come from around the World. The questionnaires are in Dutch or English, but we are happy to speak other languages with you during the lab visit! And we speak 'baby', of course!
Yes, you can bring a family member or your other child(ren). A family member is, actually, a great way to distract your baby while we put on the EEG!
Yes, we always do your EEG setup before your baby's. This way, you can see exactly what happens first. Your baby will sit on your lap while we do that.
Before the lab visit, we will share a set of questionnaires for you to complete. As a preparation for the session, we would like to ask you to wash and fully dry your hair the evening before or on the day of the lab visit. During the lab visit, we will place small amounts of gel on the EEG cap on your head. This gel is similar to an ultrasound gel. You can let us know if you have any concerns in regards to the gel we apply for the EEG, such as if you have a hairstyle that does not permit you to wash your hair on that day. In that case, we can make arrangements to fit your situation.
It is a special diploma for your baby, which we give to you as a sign of appreciation for your time and participation in our research. It is also a souvenir of your contribution to science!
We will try our best to answer your questions in regards to the visit and the EEG measurement, however, this is not a clinical test, and we cannot give you an assessment on how your baby is doing developmentally.
When we speak of 'synchrony' we refer to the similarity between your baby's and your brain's activity, recorded at the same time.
