We are pleased to invite poster abstract submission to present at BAAL/Cambridge University Press Seminar: (Re-)Exploring Ethics in Applied Linguistics Research organised at Northumbria University on 23 June 2025.
We encourage researchers with a strong focus on ethics in applied linguistics to submit abstracts. Equally, if you have encountered ethical dilemmas while undertaking your project(s) in any area of applied linguistics and would like to share them at the workshop, we encourage you to submit an abstract as well. This is a great opportunity to showcase your work and potentially receive financial support for your participation (see Scholarship Application section for further details).
Your poster abstract will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Ethics in Applied Linguistics: Does the abstract concern an aspect of ethics in applied linguistics research?
Innovation and Contribution: Is the abstract interesting, innovative, and does it contribute to current and needed discussions on ethics in the field?
Scholarly Quality: Is the abstract of high academic quality, demonstrating engagement with recent and relevant literature, appropriate theoretical frameworks, a carefully considered research design, and clear objectives, methods, and results?

Current students and early career researchers (within two years of PhD completion).
Applicants whose primary place of study or work is outside the Newcastle area. Scholarships covering travel expenses will normally NOT be allocated to those affiliated with Northumbria University or other nearby institutions.
The scholarship will be allocated based on the scores applicants received for their poster abstracts (academic merit) and their supporting statement (personal circumstances and need).
Academic merit: The criteria are listed below:
1. Does the abstract concern some aspect of ethics in applied linguistics research?
2. Is the abstract interesting and innovative in a way that contributes to current/needed discussions pertain to ethics in the field?
3. Is the abstract of scholarly and academically good quality (e.g., informed by relevant and recent literature, appropriate theoretical orientation, carefully considered research design) and indicates clear objectives, method(s), and results?
Personal circumstances and need: Applicants will also be asked to supply a 200-word narrative outlining their circumstances and reasons for applying for the scholarship.
For each of the above, there will be a maximum score of 5, totalling a 20-point maximum.
