The B40 Rally is an annual event organised and sponsored by the Vintage Drivers Club, with the assistance and support of the Veteran Car Club of Australia (Vic) and the Vintage Sports Car Club of Victoria. The aim of the B40 Rally is to attract younger drivers to the joys of driving older cars.
Simply the event targets drivers under 40 years old (give or take), driving cars built pre 1940 ~ Before 40 = B40.
After seeing the success of this style of event in Europe, a group of local youthful enthusiasts banded together to get the idea off the ground here in Victoria. Now in it's third year, the rally has become a hit and is looked forward to each year by those that attend. One of the best things about the rally is when we have multiple generations arrive in "grandad's car" with the P plates on display. I'd like to point out that we encourage grandad to come along for the rally as well, to make sure junior isn't crunching too many gears.
The main attraction of the B40 Rally is the events that take place themselves. This isn't your usual morning/afternoon tea run with scones and jam. We generally eat at pubs, cafes and bakeries and focus more on the driving than the eating. Having said that though, after the driving is done for the day the night activities usually kick on a little longer than your standard car club event and the Sunday morning drive starts at a much more relaxed pace to cater for sore heads.
Overall the B40 is a stand out event that any young person would love to be a part of. It's a fantastic excuse to introduce a younger person into the fantastic hobby that is driving prewar cars and introduce them to a whole bunch of other people their age doing the same thing.
