If you want maximum towing capacity, a seamless integration with Ford's puck system, and a lighter hitch for easier handling, choose B&W Trailer Hitches 25K; if you need a versatile slider system for tight turns in short-bed Dodge Ram trucks and a dual-jaw locking mechanism that prioritizes quiet stability, choose REESE 20K. This is not a debate about which brand is more popular or which one has better reviews; it is a decision based on the specific mechanical demands of your truck and the type of trailer you intend to haul. When I look at these two heavy-duty options, specifically for hauling classic cars where smooth, stable transport is non-negotiable, the choice comes down to whether your priority is raw load-bearing power and OEM integration or specialized cab clearance and locking security.
• Who this pick is for: Choose B&W if you own a Ford with the puck system and are moving heavy fifth-wheel loads like large travel trailers or equipment haulers.
• Who this pick is for: Choose REESE if you drive a short-bed Dodge Ram and need to navigate sharp corners without hitting the cab, especially when pulling standard-sized fifth wheels or gooseneck trailers.
The B&W Companion stands out immediately because it was engineered specifically to work with the Ford OEM Puck System. If you own a Ford truck equipped with these factory-installed puck holes, this hitch is essentially an extension of the vehicle's design rather than an aftermarket add-on. The compatibility is built into the structural integrity of the unit, ensuring that the installation intent remains consistent with how Ford designed the bed. This means you avoid drilling into your truck bed or dealing with complex rail systems that might interfere with the bed liner. The design focuses on preserving the original feature while reinforcing the connection point to handle repeated towing conditions.
What really sets this unit apart for long-haul drivers is the fully articulating head. It allows front-to-back and side-to-side pivoting, which mimics the movement of the king pin naturally. This is critical when you are towing a heavy load over uneven terrain. The cam action latching handle is another standout feature; it is engineered to release easily even when parked on unlevel sites. Imagine backing up to a ramp or parking on a slight incline at a campsite—the ability to disengage the coupling smoothly without excessive force or jarring movements makes the daily routine of connecting and disconnecting much less frustrating.

However, this hitch is not a universal solution. If you have a Chevy, GMC, Dodge, or Toyota, this product simply will not fit. It is made in America with a limited lifetime warranty, signaling a commitment to durability. You should buy this if you have a Ford and need a hitch that feels native to the truck, offering high capacity and smooth articulation. You should skip it entirely if your truck lacks the puck system or if you need a sliding mechanism to prevent cab contact in a short bed.
The REESE 20K Dual Jaw Fifth Wheel Hitch is a powerhouse designed with a very specific user in mind: the owner of a short-bed Dodge Ram. In a short-bed truck, turning a corner with a massive trailer attached often leads to the trailer hitting the cab before the turn is complete. The slider on this unit solves that problem by allowing the hitch to move back and forth, creating the necessary space for tight maneuvers. This feature alone makes it the superior choice for anyone towing on winding roads or navigating narrow lots in a Dodge Ram.
The locking mechanism deserves special attention. Unlike single-jaw systems that can sometimes rattle or feel loose, this dual jaw locking system delivers a strong, secure, and quiet king pin connection. When hauling a classic car, noise and vibration are enemies of both the cargo and the driver. A quiet connection ensures that the trailer stays firmly planted without transmitting unnecessary road noise into the cabin. The construction uses heavy-duty steel with a corrosion-resistant finish, which is vital for longevity regardless of the climate you drive in. The inclusion of the above-bed outboard ISR base rail kit means you get industry-standard in-bed mounting, providing a solid foundation for the hitch to rest upon.
There are trade-offs to consider with this model. This extra mass adds to the overall tongue weight and makes the installation process more physically demanding. It also comes with clear installation instructions from the TrailerJacks team, which suggests a focus on helping the user get it right the first time. You should choose this if you drive a short-bed Dodge Ram and need that sliding capability to protect your truck's cab. You should skip it if you do not own a Dodge Ram, as the specific rail kit and slider design are tailored to that chassis, or if you require the absolute highest possible weight rating for oversized industrial loads.
• Best for Short-Bed Truck Maneuverability → REESE 20K (Features a round tube slider for cab clearance; B&W does not slide).
• Best for Vehicle Integration → B&W Trailer Hitches 25K (Designed exclusively for Ford OEM Puck System).
• Best for Quiet, Secure Locking → REESE 20K (Dual jaw system reduces rattle and improves stability).
• Best for Unlevel Site Release → B&W Trailer Hitches 25K (Cam action handle works on inclines).
• Best for Classic Car Stability → REESE 20K (Dual jaw lock offers a tighter connection for sensitive vintage loads).
• Best for Lifetime Durability → Both (Both offer a limited lifetime manufacturer warranty).
For hauling classic cars, where the weight distribution and stability of the load are paramount, I would personally choose the REESE 20K. While the B&W offers higher capacity, the dual jaw locking system on the REESE provides a quieter, more secure connection that protects delicate vintage vehicles from the stress of rattling and shifting during transit. The round tube slider is a non-negotiable safety feature for any short-bed truck owner, preventing costly damage to the cab that a fixed hitch cannot avoid.
