If you want a premium, over-ear listening experience with deep bass and active noise cancellation for your workout, choose B&W P5; if you need secure, sound-isolating in-ear monitors that stay put during intense movement, choose Shure SE215.
• B&W P5: Offers rich, detailed audio with active noise cancellation and an over-ear design, but it is heavier and bulkier than true sport earbuds. Best for listeners who prioritize high-fidelity sound quality and don't mind carrying a slightly larger device.
• Shure SE215: Delivers professional-grade isolation and a secure fit using a single dynamic microdriver, though it lacks active noise cancellation and has a more limited frequency range. Best for athletes who need headphones that won't fall out and block out gym noise physically.
The Bowers & Wilkins P5 is engineered for those who treat their workout as an extension of their music studio. This isn't just about moving your body; it's about hearing every nuance in the track. The behind-the-scenes technology here is serious stuff. We are talking about specially developed ultra-linear neodymium magnets paired with highly optimized Mylar diaphragms. These components work together to keep the music sounding rich, pure, and incredibly detailed without any artificial adjustments needed. If you are someone who analyzes tracks while running or lifting, this level of fidelity matters. You get "Deep" bass and "Enhanced" treble that feels natural rather than boosted by digital filters.
The physical design reflects its status as a high-end mobile headphone. It features an over-ear placement with a metal enclosure, which gives it a premium feel but also adds weight. At 1.9 pounds, this is a substantial piece of gear compared to typical earbuds. The earpiece shape is designed to sit flat or slightly curved around the ear, creating a seal that works well for passive isolation. However, the real magic happens with the Active Noise Cancellation feature. For a workout environment where machinery hums or crowds chatter, this electronic silence can be a game-changer, allowing you to focus entirely on your rhythm without cranking the volume to dangerous levels.

You should buy the B&W P5 if you value sound purity above all else and prefer the comfort of large cups over small in-ear tips. The touch controller allows you to manage playback easily, and the wired connectivity via a 3.5mm jack ensures zero latency or battery anxiety. However, you must skip this model if your primary concern is minimizing weight or if you need something that fits inside a tight pocket or small gym bag. The metal carrying case included is robust, but it does add to the overall bulk. This product is for the audiophile who wants to bring their studio-quality sound into the fitness room, even if it means dealing with a bit more hardware.
The Shure SE215 PRO takes a completely different approach, focusing on the mechanics of staying put and blocking out the world. These are not over-ear cans; they are professional sound-isolating earphones designed to fit snugly inside the ear canal. The core of their performance is the Single Dynamic MicroDriver. While other brands might stack multiple drivers for complexity, Shure goes for a balanced armature driver system that delivers clear sound and deep bass in a compact package. The result is a frequency range of 22Hz to 17.5kHz, which covers the essential spectrum for most workout playlists without the massive bandwidth of over-ear models.
Durability and fit are the selling points here. The enclosure material is foam, and the package includes a comprehensive Fit Kit to ensure you find the perfect seal. This physical seal is what creates the "Sound Isolation" effect. Unlike the B&W P5, which uses electronics to cancel noise, the SE215 relies on physics. By blocking external sound waves from entering the ear canal, these earphones provide a quiet environment naturally. This is crucial for anyone who needs to hear their surroundings slightly or simply hates the pressure feeling of active noise cancellation. The control method is straightforward push-button media control, making it easy to adjust volume or skip tracks without fumbling with touch sensors when you are sweating.
This product is ideal for the person who considers security paramount. If you do high-intensity interval training (HIIT), jump rope, or heavy cardio where bouncing is inevitable, the in-ear shape of the SE215 is superior. It stays locked in place thanks to the custom fit provided by the included ear tips. The item weighs only 4.59 ounces, making it virtually unnoticeable compared to the nearly two-pound B&W P5. The lack of active noise cancellation means you must rely entirely on the physical seal to drown out the gym noise.
• Best for battery life → Neither requires charging for audio playback as both are primarily wired via 3.5mm Jack, though the B&W P5 handles noise cancellation power differently than the Shure SE215's passive isolation.
• Best for sound isolation → Shure SE215 wins with its physical Sound Isolation design and foam tips, whereas B&W P5 relies on Active Noise Cancellation and over-ear sealing.
• Best for bass depth → B&W P5 offers "Deep" bass with a wider frequency range down to 20 Hz, compared to the SE215's 22 Hz lower limit.
• Best for portability → Shure SE215 is significantly lighter at 4.59 ounces versus the 1.9 pounds of the B&W P5, making it easier to carry anywhere.
• Best for durability → Shure SE215 features a rugged design with a carrying case and fit kit, while B&W P5 uses a metal enclosure that is sturdy but heavier.
• Best for touch controls → B&W P5 utilizes a Touch controller for intuitive management, whereas Shure SE215 uses Push Button controls.
• Best for clarity → B&W P5 provides enhanced treble and a 38,000 Hz upper limit, offering more detail than the SE215's 17.5 kHz ceiling.
• Best for workout stability → Shure SE215 is the clear winner for intense movement due to its in-ear secure fit, unlike the over-ear B&W P5.
In my opinion, for a dedicated workout session, I would choose the Shure SE215. The physics of staying secure in your ears during high-impact movement outweighs the extra frequency range of the B&W P5. The sound isolation of the SE215 provides a focused environment without the bulk of over-ear cups that can slip or get in the way. While the B&W P5 is a marvel of engineering for casual listening or low-impact exercise, the Shure SE215 is built specifically for the rigors of athletic performance. It is the tool that gets the job done without distraction.
You should check the manufacturer's specific care instructions for sweat resistance before using them during heavy workouts.
The B&W P5 is designed with "Deep" bass and extends down to 20 Hz, giving it a theoretical advantage in low-frequency reproduction compared to the Shure SE215's 22 Hz lower limit.
With an impedance of 26 ohms, the B&W P5 is designed to work directly with standard devices, though higher quality sources may reveal more of its detailed capabilities. The Shure SE215 has a 20 ohm impedance, making it equally easy to drive from most portable players.
The product information mentions Bluetooth version 5 with a 30-meter range alongside wired connectivity options. This suggests compatibility with wireless adapters or accessories, but the core unit is a wired earphone.
