Department of
Mathematics
Profile of Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics was established in the year 1972. It has seven dedicated and strongly motivated faculty members, including four full-time and three government approved CHB faculty. Additionally, the department benefits from the guidance of a professor emeritus, who provides valuable support to students. The department offers undergraduate programs for the Faculty of Science and Commerce (F.Y and T.Y.) and a post-graduate program in Applied Mathematics.
Our students consistently qualify for the IIT-JAM entrance exam, securing admissions for post-graduation in Mathematics at prestigious institutions such as IITs, IISERs, NITs, and other renowned institutions in our country.
The department benefits from having a Prime Minister Research Fellow (PMRF) from IIT Bombay as a visiting faculty. This affiliation has greatly assisted students by providing guidance and insight into various opportunities within the field of mathematics.
We also offer certificate courses on Python, Excel, LaTeX, Scilab Programming, and Mathematics for Competitive Examinations, catering to Arts, Science, and Commerce students. Additionally, numerous students from departments have completed courses on SWAYAM-NPTEL and Spoken Tutorial provided by IIT-Bombay.
During the academic years 2018-19 and 2019-20, we organized the 'Theorem A Month' lecture series featuring eminent professors from IITs, TIFR, and other reputed institutions in our country. Recently, we have published the lecture proceedings of 'Theorem A Month' at the University of Mumbai Press.
The department has a 'Brainstorm Corner' where we post puzzles every week for students of Arts, Science, and Commerce. This activity is highly popular among the students as it helps them to conquer problems scientifically and motivates them to tackle challenging tasks.
Every year, our students are selected for various training programs like MTTS (Mathematical Training and Talent Search), TPM (Training Programme in Mathematics) and mini-MTTS programs organized by NBHM and the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. In the years 2008-09, 2012-13, and 2013-14, our students secured the first position in the Mathematics Merit List of the University of Mumbai. Some of our students are currently pursuing or have completed their post-graduation, Ph.D., PDF from reputed institutes in and outside India.
The department were honored with the 'STAR COLLEGE SCHEME' from the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India for the period of 2017-2020. In the year 2010-11, we received the Basic Scientific Research (BSR) Grant from UGC, Government of India, New Delhi.
To foster interest in mathematics among students, we organize the Intercollegiate Maths Exhibition 'Fun-In-Math' every year. In 2019-20, we hosted a mini-MTTS program on our campus from November 4th to 9th, 2019, funded by the MTTS fund, DBT STAR College Scheme, and our college management. We also organized 'MATH BATTLE 2020' under the DBT STAR College Scheme for our B.Sc. students to promote learning through games.
Recently, the department had organized a two-day workshop on ‘Optimization of Industrial Operations over Time’ held on March 15th and 16th, 2024. This workshop provided students with insights into how mathematics is utilized in industry and motivated them to undertake projects from the industry.
Overall, the Department of Mathematics has consistently demonstrated excellence in academics, research, and student development, making significant contributions to the field of mathematics education and fostering a culture of intellectual inquiry and academic rigor.
