Participating in the tutorship programme has been one of the most valuable learning experiences in my academic journey. Initially, I was both excited and nervous about working closely with students and assisting them in understanding their coursework. Over time, this role strengthened my knowledge of the subject matter and improved my communication, patience, and leadership skills.
Working with students taught me the importance of flexibility and empathy. I quickly realised that each student learns differently and that some require more time and encouragement than others. There were moments when I had to adapt my explanations, use practical examples, or even slow down the pace to ensure that everyone was keeping up. This experience reminded me that teaching is about passing on knowledge and creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I learned that listening to students’ struggles carefully and offering reassurance often motivated them more than simply giving the correct answer.
Another key lesson I learned came from collaborating with a kind and supportive lecturer. Their approachable nature and genuine interest in students’ progress inspired me to emulate the same qualities as a tutor. I observed how they treated students respectfully, encouraged participation, and created a welcoming atmosphere. This taught me that kindness is a powerful teaching tool that builds trust and fosters positive relationships. Their mentorship also reminded me that a good tutor is not just an authority figure but a guide who walks alongside students in their learning journey.
On a personal level, the programme improved my confidence and deepened my appreciation for teamwork. I discovered the joy of seeing students grow in understanding, and I also learned to appreciate the challenges lecturers face in managing different learning needs. Most importantly, I realized that teaching is a two-way process: while I was helping students, I was also learning from their questions, perspectives, and resilience.
In conclusion, my experience in the tutorship programme has been transformative. It taught me patience, adaptability and the value of kindness in education. Working with students and a supportive lecturer has reinforced my desire to contribute to academic growth by sharing knowledge and creating an atmosphere of encouragement and respect. This programme has shown me that teaching is not only about the mind but also about the heart.
