Understanding IPTV: Internet Protocol Television

Internet Protocol television (IPTV), also known as TV over broadband, is the service delivery of television over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. It is typically sold and operated by a telecom provider and includes both video on demand services for viewing or replaying content (unicast) and broadcast live television that is streamed over the Internet (multicast), as opposed to delivery through traditional terrestrial, satellite, and cable transmission formats.

Market Adoption

As the adoption of broadband-based internet connections increased in the 2000s, IPTV broadcasts began to gain popularity. It operates on a closed network and is frequently offered to customers by ISPs in conjunction with internet access services.

In certain areas, IPTV has been successful. For instance, in Western Europe, pay IPTV customers surpassed pay satellite TV subscribers in 2015. Media delivery via private and corporate networks is another usage for IPTV.
