Between Generations: The Fire That Guides Me

- Azahar Raza

In life, we are often shaped by two kinds of people, those who came before us, and those who will follow. For me, the bridge between past and future rests between two sacred names: Bahaton and Seemoon. My grandmother and my child. One, the ember that lit my way. The other, the spark I now carry forward.

At the center of my life’s journey is my grandmother, Bahaton. Her hands were worn by time but rich with grace. Her love was quiet, never boastful, but in her silence was the strength of a thousand storms weathered. She didn’t believe in grand speeches. She believed in presence, in showing up with heart and humility. She taught me that strength isn’t loud, but lasting. That dignity isn’t about pride, it’s about how you rise when life humbles you.

Bahaton had a way of saying things that stayed with you long after she left the room. One of her most memorable lines, “You don’t need to shine to be seen. Just stand tall and true, and the right eyes will find you”, was less a piece of advice and more a philosophy. She didn’t live for applause; she lived with integrity. And that became my compass.

As I hold the hand of my child, Seamoon, I realize how sacred the chain of love is. He is everything I ever dreamed of and everything I didn’t know I needed. In his eyes, I see curiosity and courage. In his laughter, I hear the music of a future I want to help shape, not by protecting him from life’s struggles, but by preparing him with the same lessons Bahaton gave me. To be kind, but unmovable. To walk with humility, but never shrink.

It is a continuum. It is a bridge between a woman who gave me roots, and a child who gives me wings. Every chapter is linked with her sacrifice, and every page turns with the sound of Seamoon’s future calling. And for all of us walking between memory and legacy, may we never forget where we come from, and always believe in where we’re going.
