The Story Behind the Ayni Academy Logo
Ayni Academy was founded to share the benefits of Judo beyond sport. Rooted in the traditions of Kodokan Judo, the Academy promotes personal development, community service, safety, and peacebuilding by developing resilient individuals guided by respect, discipline, mutual support, and lifelong learning.
Founded by Omar Tejada and Augusto Benites, two Peruvian judokas now living in Canada, Ayni Academy brings together decades of experience as instructors, mentors, and public servants who have positively impacted communities in Peru, the United States, Haiti, and Canada.
The name Ayni, a Quechua word meaning reciprocity and mutual well-being, reflects the Andean philosophy that closely aligns with one of Judo's highest principles, Jita Kyōei (自他共栄)—"prosperity and mutual welfare." Together, these concepts unite the founders' Andean heritage with their lifelong dedication to Judo.
Every element of the Academy's logo reflects this identity. The kanji (柔道) represent Judo—The Gentle Way; the black belt, bearing the Peruvian and Canadian flags, symbolizes the founders' journey and the knowledge they have brought from Peru to Canada. The nautical compass represents purpose, integrity, and the guidance provided by Judo's principles throughout life.
The two dolphins reflect the founders' backgrounds in lifeguarding and aquatic safety and symbolize protection, cooperation, and service. The waves represent life's challenges, while the calm water beyond symbolizes resilience, peace, and prosperity. The surrounding rope signifies unity, strength, and a lifelong commitment to learning.
Finally, the deep blue background reflects the founders' naval and aquatic backgrounds while symbolizing trust, wisdom, and stability. The gold accents represent excellence, honour, achievement, and the pursuit of personal and spiritual growth.
Together, these elements express Ayni Academy's philosophy: uniting the wisdom of the Andes with the principles of Judo to build safer individuals, stronger communities, and a more peaceful world.
To contribute to the development of well-rounded individuals who, inspired by the fundamental principles of Judo, build safer and more resilient communities, generating a positive and lasting impact on society.

At Ayni Academy, more than three decades of international teaching experience form the foundation of every program. The Academy brings together expertise in Judo, military combatives, self-defence, and lifesaving gained through instruction in military, civilian, academic, and community settings across Peru, the United States, Haiti, and Canada. Its unique approach combines martial arts, international operational experience, academic research, and evidence-based practices to deliver practical and ethical training relevant to the challenges of everyday life.
Ayni Academy's philosophy is rooted in the values of Kodokan Judo, where technical excellence is inseparable from character development. Guided by the Judo principles, it teaches that martial arts are not merely systems of self-protection, but powerful tools for developing discipline, respect, resilience, leadership, and lifelong learning.
Ayni Academy's instructional experience includes developing and implementing the Peruvian Marines Martial Arts Program (PAMIN), through which thousands of Peruvian Marines have trained in military combatives, close-quarters combat, tactical decision-making, and the professional, lawful, and ethical application of force. The Academy's instructors have been trained by and also contributed as guest instructors with the United States Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) and have delivered seminars and workshops for military personnel, law enforcement officers, peacekeepers, and civilian organizations internationally.
Beyond professional and military settings, Ayni Academy is deeply committed to community service. Its instructors have provided Judo, self-defence, water safety and first aid training for women, youth, peacekeepers and humanitarian officers, first responders, Indigenous communities, and vulnerable populations, including educational initiatives in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and through programs in remote communities in Peru and Canada. These experiences reinforce the Academy's belief that personal safety education should empower individuals while fostering respect, inclusion, and community well-being.
Today, Ayni Academy continues to deliver high-quality instruction in Judo, combatives, self-defence, and first aid, designed to meet the needs of children, adults, elders, professionals, organizations, and community groups. Every course integrates practical skills with critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and a prevention-first philosophy that extends far beyond the training environment.
Guided by its motto, "Transforming Lives. Strengthening Communities.", Ayni Academy believes every person can become a more confident individual, a responsible leader, and a positive influence in their family, workplace, and community. By combining martial arts with education, service, and evidence-based training, Ayni Academy seeks not only to develop capable practitioners but also to inspire safer, healthier, and more resilient communities where respect, mutual support, and lifelong learning thrive.
