Exploring the Ayahuasca Ritual in Peru: A Transformative Journey with Traditional Shipibo Shamans
For a truly special and life-altering spiritual ceremony, you can travel to Peru for the Ayahuasca ceremony. Conducted deep in the Amazon, the ceremonies are led by Shipibo shamans, who for centuries have studied and practiced the sacred tradition of plant medicine. We at Kene Nete provide the opportunity for one to discover a connection of the sacred culture behind Ayahuasca, as well as healing within oneself through an authentic guided ritual that allows one to safely immerse with this ancient medicine.
Ayahuasca is a potent, plant-based tea that is steeped in cultural and spiritual history in South America, especially among native tribes from the Amazon. By combining the Ayahuasca vine with the leaves of the Chacruna plant, it is one of the sacred medicines known to help open your consciousness. The brew brings upon visions and emotional release, enabling healing, both physically and psychologically. This experience is supported by the wisdom of the Shipibo shamans, whose songs, rituals, and guidance play a crucial role in the ceremony.
Kene Nete traditional Shipibo Ayahuasca treatment is a deeply transformative, purifying ritual. Our ceremonies occur in the Maloca, a sacred, dark space backdropped by the Amazon jungle. Ceremonies are conducted with respect for the plants, the land, and the traditions carried on by generations of shamans.
Arrival and Preparation
Before the ceremony begins, our guests arrive in the late afternoon, where the shamans prepare the Maloca, ensuring the space is ready for the profound journey ahead. Our Ayahuasca ceremonies typically involve one shaman for every two participants, ensuring personalized care and guidance. Participants are provided with essentials such as blankets, pillows, mapachos (sacred tobacco), a lighter, paper towels, a light, and water. Most importantly, you will be given your own purge bucket, which is integral to the process of releasing emotional or physical blockages during the ceremony.
At 6:30 pm, as darkness falls and the ceremony begins, everyone gathers in the Maloca. The shamans, known as maestros and maestras, will begin by performing spiritual rituals to create a protective environment. They clear the space of negative energies and invite the spirits of Ayahuasca and other medicinal plants into the ceremony. During this time, the participants are asked to reflect on their intentions for the journey.
Intention Setting
Before consuming the medicine, each participant is encouraged to speak their intention aloud—whether to heal, seek clarity, or connect with their inner wisdom. While some choose to share their intentions openly, others may prefer to whisper their thoughts or keep them personal. The important thing is that each person’s intention resonates with their heart.
Drinking the Ayahuasca
Once the intentions are shared, the shamans pour the medicine into a cup for each participant. Afterward, participants return to their mats, lay down, and prepare for the journey. The space is then immersed in complete darkness, with only the soft light of a candle to illuminate the sacred surroundings. As the medicine begins to take effect, the shamans start to sing icaros—sacred chants that guide the energy of the ceremony.
The effects of Ayahuasca typically start to become noticeable after 30-40 minutes. During this time, the icaros are sung individually for each participant to assist in their journey. The plant medicine will guide each participant in its unique way, with some experiencing deep emotional release, vivid visions, or physical sensations.
The ceremony lasts anywhere from 3 to 6 hours, depending on how long the medicine’s influence is needed. Throughout this time, participants are encouraged to remain in silence, focusing on their own experience and intention. Our facilitators, who do not drink the medicine themselves, are there to offer support. They ensure the logistics of the ceremony run smoothly, such as guiding participants to the restroom or providing necessary materials.
A Personal Journey of Healing
What happens during an Ayahuasca journey differs for each participant. Some may have vivid, visionary experiences, while others may engage in deep emotional processing. The powerful nature of the ceremony encourages participants to surrender to the experience and allow the medicine to reveal its wisdom.
When the ceremony concludes, we ensure that every participant is well taken care of and ready for rest. The shamans and facilitators remain present to offer any last guidance and ensure everyone is safe. In the early morning, the space remains calm, allowing for quiet reflection and integration of the experiences.
Silent Reflection
The hours following the ceremony are important for integration. Participants are encouraged to maintain silence, journaling or reflecting on their journey. This is a time for introspection, allowing the wisdom of the ceremony to settle and guide future actions. Don’t rush for answers—simply allow what comes up without forcing understanding. This gentle, non-judgmental approach is key to integrating the experience fully.
