The first and oldest of the monster kingdom’s sectors, and also the largest, the Refuge is made up mostly of ancient ruins left behind by monster forebears. The growth of most of the Underground’s food supplies occurs here.
The original entrance to the Underground, long sealed up by monsters fearful of humanity trying to cull them for good, and crowned by the Deep Dive, the long tunnel leading down through the mountainside, through which both Frisk and Aliza fell to enter the Underground. The last resting place of the first human, and the haunting/hunting grounds of a nameless horror.
The first home of ancient monsterkind, long forgotten to history, and nearly sunken beneath still but rising waters. One of the only places where untainted magic still exists in the Underground.
Maintenance tunnels, walkways, and dried up aqueducts, left behind by the monsters that lived beneath the mountain long before the war. Hauntingly silent, and choked with both dust and enormous, thorny vines.
The ancient city monsterkind settled in, after their banishment beneath the mountain. Many monsters fled here, when the Hunger first began to spread, in the hope it would protect them. It didn’t. Napstablook wanders the many streets and alleys here, picking off small game and woefully mourning the loss of all they had once known.
The Refuge’s capital, and the center of farming and agriculture in the Underground, spread out across many fields and pastures beyond the walls of the Ancient Ruins. Many plant and rock elementals once worked their magic here, to keep the soil fertile and high yielding. The fields lie barren now, consumed by ravenous monsters and time alike.
The remains of an ancient human fortress, sunk deep within the mountain and long forgotten. Its hollowed out shell was once used as a trading hub across all sectors of the kingdom, but now houses only the few spiderfolk that haven’t returned to Hotland or settled in Winterrest.
