11/3 - 3: Leung ME Advocacy
Leung, Bo Wah. (2005). Resources for music education advocacy. Hong Kong Institute of Education / International Society for Music Education.
"Resources for music education advocacy" is a list of many resources for music educaton advocacy, as the title suggests. The resources are listed by type: including websites, books, and articles. Included in the list are resources to advocate and promote music education and programs on an advocacy level, as well as resources (such as the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation) to help support programs financially and with equipment. There are resources for all kinds of music programs - in schools, communities, and in many countries.
I think the most useful way to put these resources to work would be to make articles and advocacy materials available to people (administrators, parents, etc.) in a monthly newsletter for the program, to support with outside evidence, research, and promotion my own advocacy for my music program. In addition, if I teach in an underserved school, it would certainly be worth looking into the support resources and foundations that could help me build and fund my program. On several levels, this list is worth holding on to.
Questions for Mr. Leung:
-What are some strategies for writing and finding government grants to support music education programs and facilities?
-What is the best way to make the facts, research, and advocacy of others (resources in this list) available and understood by those who have power over my music program?
