Since its inception in 2014, A.W. Puma Remodeling & Restoration has had the opportunity to work on a wide range of exciting projects. However, few experiences compare to the chance to collaborate with a prestigious interior design and architecture publication like *Architectural Digest*.
When A.W. Puma was first approached by *Architectural Digest* for a Boston home remodeling project, the team was eager to get started. The entire transformation was documented from beginning to end as part of a video series for the magazine. Read on to discover Basement Remodel more about this unique project and A.W. Puma Remodeling & Restoration’s role in revitalizing the space.
The project’s main objective was to give a family’s living space a much-needed refresh. The client, Kelley, and her husband had been living in their home for almost six years, raising two boys and their dog. Their family room, the heart of the home where they spent most of their time, was the focus of the remodel. Kelley shared that this was the space where the family gathered after dinner, played, and spent most of their time together.
Her goal for the refresh was to make the room more welcoming for guests, improve storage, and update the flow. Kelley had long dreamed of making these changes, but plans were postponed when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2021. After successfully completing her treatment, Kelley and her family were finally ready to tackle the family room remodel.
In the *Architectural Digest* video, Kelley is introduced to Julie Sousa, a talented designer and founder of Avant Garde, a home décor and design brand. Julie is an interior stylist, DIY enthusiast, and content creator. One of her first suggestions to Kelley was to reorient the room’s layout by making the fireplace a focal point, adding storage along the wall behind the sofa, and incorporating wood beams to add warmth and character.
The budget for the project was set at around $30,000, and Julie proposed a combination of DIY work and professional help to maximize the budget. This is where A.W. Puma Remodeling & Restoration stepped in to handle the more complex aspects of the remodel.
Albert from A.W. Puma was contacted by Julie and *Architectural Digest* to manage some of the technical elements of the living room remodel. The team’s expertise was essential for tasks such as installing the wood beams. Kelley was excited about the idea of adding beams to the ceiling but was concerned about the low ceiling height. The professionals at A.W. Puma devised a clever solution to address this concern.
Instead of using traditional wood beams, they crafted custom beams by joining multiple pieces of wood to create the appearance of a single, cohesive unit. This was accomplished using a 45-degree bevel saw, allowing them to maintain the cozy aesthetic while limiting the beam depth to just three inches, preserving ceiling height. In addition to the beams, A.W. Puma handled several other aspects of the remodel, contributing to the stunning final result. By the time the project was complete, Kelley and her family were thrilled with both the DIY elements and the professional craftsmanship.
