Shortly after Independence, the Government of India started a program to warm or provide people, and by 1960, around 500000 people were provided houses. In 1957, the Five Year Plans were launched by the Prime Minister under its purview of Village Housing. The unit was launched under which people were given loans to build houses up to ₹ 5000 and by the end of 1979 around 65000 houses had been constructed after that.
In 1985, Indira Gandhi Awas Yojana was launched by Shri Rajiv Gandhi, which gave further impetus to the program of providing houses to the people. Firstly this program was started for ST SC and lower class people but after some time it By expanding its scope, it was also made available to the people with BPL.
In the same sequence in 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Launched this scheme so that this program went ahead and its objective was to provide affordable houses to the people and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) program is currently going on.
