I am adopted; this is not something I am used to sharing. I was lucky enough to be taken away from what would have been a broken home, a life with a role model who had neither a high school diploma nor a steady job. A life with an uncertain, under-resourced future—one lacking education and a chance at opportunity. I was given a second chance and gifted a new life. Many born into such circumstances are not so lucky. I was given this before I had any control or say over my life. This has made me realize how often individuals are not responsible for the struggles they find themselves facing. Most are not given the second chance that I was. This has provided me with not only perspective but a sense of responsibility to extend a second chance to those who have not been provided one.
