Day 1 (September 14, 2025)
On a crisp Sunday morning, after a trip to the South Pearl Street Farmer’s Market, I headed down East Louisiana Ave. to Washington Park. Located between S. Downing St. and E. Louisiana Ave. is an oasis of luscious grass and ponds to explore. The Sun hiding between clouds companioned with a gentle breeze made it the perfect weather for a walk in the park.
As if immediately trying to impress me by its’ beauty, ducks flew overhead I was entering the park.
Ducks were not the only animals I encountered. The park was filled with dogs. From people walking dogs on leases to dogs being pushed in strollers, as a dog lover myself, I felt welcomed due to all the precious animals I saw. Not only were the dogs getting their workout in, but the park was a haven for every person trying to get their Sunday morning workout in. There were people simply walking, like myself, people going on runs, biking, playing tennis or volleyball, meditating, and even people rollerskating. It gave the park a sense of community. It did not feel like people were trying to show off, but like everyone just wanted to take care of themselves and have a good day, which I believe they succeeded in.
The park felt like it was for everyone. There were people of all ages enjoying the land on this beautiful morning. Families were playing with their kids on the multiple playgrounds, older people were playing volleyball, young couples were having a picnic on the grass, and people of all ages were sitting on benches reading. There truly was something for everyone there to enjoy.
After walking for a while, I decided to sit on a bench and eat a breakfast burrito I got from the Farmer’s Market. My eating was accompanied by the soundtrack of live jazz music coming from the opposite side of the field of grass. This was the prime opportunity for some people, and dog, watching. As I was finishing my food, the Sun decided to peak out of the clouds and say hello, so I decided to stand up and continue my adventure around the park.
As I was walking, I came across this mini garden filled with vibrant flowers. The flowers felt as if they were reaching towards the sky to get closer to the Sun. Bees were flying flower to flower to retrieve pollen. This place felt like an oasis inside the oasis that is the park.
My journey continued, and I came across a lake. The dove boats reminded me of a scene out of a rom-com movie! I hope to eventually try going on one of these.
I began rearing the end of my walk in the park and was feeling excited to see how this place will change during my visits throughout the quarter. Despite it being late Summer, some leaves were already turning yellow. This brought the promise of autumn on its way.
Although I did not see the whole of the park during this visit, I am looking forward to my future trips to explore the rest of the land and learn more about its plants, history and importance. Washington Park I will see you soon!
