The Department of Botany was established in 1968. From a humble beginning, the department has come a long way, setting and crossing new milestones over the years. The Department believes in holistic approach to education, where the student-teacher relationship is one of nurtured and nurturing, so the faculty member also try to meet the students in an non-formal atmosphere more often so that the students can open up & hence create an atmosphere of friendliness and trust.
To inculcate scientific temper, pursuance of excellence and to encourage entrepreneurial skills among the students the Department regularly organizes workshops, Seminars, Herbal Expo's etc.
The department established a Botanical Garden in the college premises to conserve the Biodiversity of the local flora. The Garden houses rare and endangered medicinal plants. Enumeration of campus flora was done annually and the flora of the campus listed in the digital herbarium.
To cultivate social responsibility and environmental consciousness among the students we have started an Ecoclub - a channel to make a difference. As part of it, the Department launched a sustainable and green initiative programme - Prerna annually since 2011, to promote the use of ecofriendly clay Ganesha and the medicinal importance of the Ekavimshati patra (21 leaves used to worship the Lord). The department distributes clay Ganesha idols and the patri sets to staff, students and the local public along with the pamphlet depicting the common name, botanical name of 21 plants and their medicinal importance in two languages i.e. English and Telugu. Our students conducts awareness campaigns in neighboring colonies, schools to promote the use of ecofrindly Ganesha and the medicinal importance of the plants.

To provide beyond the class room experiences we regularly conducts various activities to expose the students to diverse areas of their subject. Taking the student on Botanical tours to Araku valley, Ananthagiri Hill, Achampet Forest etc, to study the flora and fauna. Our students also visit horticulture shows, Ayurvedic melas and to places of Botanical interest regularly.
To Test the students acquaintance with recent trends and developments in the field of Science and Technology the department organizes Botany Fest. annually - conducts events like Quiz, Essay writing, elocution , herbal presentations, best out of waste, vegetable carving, concept videos competitions etc.
The department Conducted Carbon Foot Print study (2010) of the A.V. College with the help of the staff.
To bring out all round development in the students, they were allotted seminar topics and encouraged to express their thoughts and share knowledge with the fellow students.
Department in Collaboration with Agri & Horticultural Society Nampally introduced short term certificate courses on Plant Propagation, Organic cultivation and Mushroom cultivation.
Department has recognised research lab which produced six Ph.D's.
