Carbon dioxide (CO₂) serves as an effective cryogenic agent, enabling precise and economical temperature control for food chilling, cooling, and freezing applications. This use helps preserve quality and extend shelf life, particularly in Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP).
In the beverage industry, CO₂ is essential for ensuring consistent flavor, carbonation, and taste in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic products. It also enhances efficiency in bottling and canning processes.
In greenhouse environments, CO₂ can promote plant growth and reduce crop damage, serving as a safer and more cost-effective alternative to acids and chemicals in water treatment. This includes applications in pulp and paper mills, industrial operations, and municipal water treatment facilities.
Additionally, CO₂ is widely used as a shielding gas in welding and metalworking applications. It is often mixed with argon to prevent atmospheric contamination of molten metal during electric arc welding.
In medical applications, CO₂ is critical for cell growth in fermenters and bioreactors. For respiratory purposes, CO₂ USP is used for insufflation and is frequently combined with oxygen or air to stimulate deep breathing.
