Please note I am aware that you are looking for a solution to AVI transparency, this is just an alternative way of presenting user with a "progress", which seems to be more lightweight (no dependency on windows media playback facilities) and flexible (such animation controller can be used on any image).

Try renaming a mov file to .avi. It will then play with windows media player. Then uninstall the evil apple program and see if it still plays with WMP. It it works, it will still be an evil file, but no one will know it.

You did not change the container to an AVi with that simple operation. Your computer reqcognizes that file as quicktime from its header and uses quicktime codecs to render it. AVI extension just tells your computer to use windows mediaplayer to do that. Once you uninstall that quicktime, it will not play.

It might also be that some later windows versions have the necessary MJPEG codec (not quicktime codec) installed by microsoft by default and that is why this particular MJPEG encoded MOV file works with medialplayer. Really interesting.

I was recording a screen session and then my power cord came out and the laptop shut down. I tried to open the .avi file, but it says that windows cannot open it. I thought mabye it was because the file was too big (50 gigs) so i tried to trim it, but because I cant open it will not work. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to repair the file or open it?

If your program or camera has the option, next time have it split the file every 5 gigs or so. I do this for gaming recording using FRAPs, because windows just has issues handling video files over 20 gigs (note, the only time you're going to see files this big is if you have uncompressed full RGB video). 2351a5e196
