David Labkovski (1906-1991) wanted his artwork to commemorate the Holocaust, the Jewish community of Vilna (current day Vilnius, Lithuania), his traumatic experiences in the Soviet Gulag system and his later life in Israel.
This exhibit fulfills his mission to bear witness to the past by sharing his work with the historical context.
Because Labkovski’s work explores the human toll of hatred and antisemitism, we can use his experiences and his artwork to build a bridge from the past to the present—to begin conversations, foster compassion and empathy, and understand the connectivity of history to the world today.
Throughout the exhibit, there are interactive components; we hope you take the time to be part of our community and join the conversation.
Labkovski’s work includes oils, gouache, charcoal, and line drawings. He worked with any available material, often painting on burlap.
The original works are held in the collection of Barbara Barishman, Los Angeles, United States, Patricia Flaum, Johannesburg, South Africa, and from holdings at the David Labkovski Museum of Jewish Life, Ramat Gan, Israel.
