Professor Avinash Khare is an accomplished physicist with focus on Plasma Physics and Nuclear Fusion. He obtained his PhD in Plasma Physics in 1984 from the Physical Research Lab, Ahmedabad, and was at the Institute for Plasma Research from 1984 to 2001. From 2005 to 2018, he was a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Delhi. Currently, he is the Vice Chancellor of Sikkim Central University, Gangtok, Sikkim. In his career, Prof. Khare has worked at many esteemed institutions abroad such as the Culham lab and JET Oxford Univ., Univ. of Columbia, Univ. of California, Riverside, Univ. of Iowa, and CSPAR Univ. of Albama. His research interests span diverse areas, such as Nuclear Fusion, Laser plasma, Non-neutral plasma, Dusty plasma, Astrophysics and Cosmology, Statistical mechanics, Number theory and computing algorithms. He has proposed innovative concepts such as the Non- Archimedean mathematics, which is bounded mathematics without infinity, and the Plasma engine. Prof. Khare has an impressive academic record with nearly 200 research papers including 17 in Phys. Rev. Let. He was the Principal Investigator on NASA heliospheric project (2010-2014) and in the consultancy project of Thruster Technology for ISRO (2009-2011). He served on the editorial board of the Journal of Plasma Physics U.K. and currently is on the editorial board of Pramana. Recognized for his scholarly contributions, Prof. Khare has received numerous awards and honors, including Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Delhi, the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, and the National Academy of Science (NASI), Allahabad, the Homi Bhabha fellowship award, and the Biren Roy memorial lecture award of INSA. Prof. Khare’s leadership and service roles include serving as the President of the Plasma Science Society of India (2010-2012), member IUCAA council, IASST council, and IUAC board and various administrative positions in other universities.
