This video shows a broadcast from the perspective of the producer (me), in real time. My producing of a live episode using Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) is shown side-by-side with what people see on their TVs and devices. This episode included a unique feature in which a Skype video feed from the school commons allowed the audience to watch the competition as it unfolded during the episode. You can also hear/see me talking to and shushing people during the episode because there are always loads of distractions behind the scenes. Live production can be stressful, but this was a great learning experience as we at PV are always looking to try new and ambitious ideas.
This episode included a LIVE weather report, and it was very elaborate to produce. It demonstrates our new two-camera setup. Using OBS, I had to switch from Laila to split screen, to Cameron, and back to Laila on certain cue words. It took careful planning and preparation.
There is much work that goes into producing a live episode including lining up the scenes and video clips and coordinating with the anchor, camera operator and graphics producer to get everything in place before the broadcast. This is a typical daily episode I produced, which demonstrates the producer’s (my) responsibility to combine live broadcast with pre-recorded content such as the graphics and videos for the episode.
