The course introduces students to the evolution of the English language and literature, focusing on key periods, movements, and genres.
It develops analytical and communication skills through the study of major authors and texts, fostering critical thinking and an appreciation of the cultural and intellectual values reflected in literature.
Semester 1 & 2
CO1: Explain the origin and development of the English language and outline the historical background of English literature.
CO2: Identify and describe the structural aspects of English (word formation, semantic change, sentence types) and major literary genres.
CO3: Analyze representative texts (poetry, drama, prose, fiction) for their themes, techniques, and stylistic features.
CO4: Interpret literary elements (plot, character, setting, imagery, narrative technique, point of view) in relation to movements such as Renaissance, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, and Modernism.
CO5: Evaluate the contribution of canonical authors (Milton, Pope, Blake, Eliot, Shakespeare, Shaw, Brontë, Orwell, Bacon, Swift, Lamb, Woolf) to English literature
CO6: Develop critical reading, analytical writing, and communication skills while cultivating an appreciation for the intellectual, social, and cultural values reflected in literature.
