If you want a rugged, pocket-sized speaker that doubles as an FM radio for outdoor cycling with a built-in battery and clear voice tuning, choose Avantree SP850; if you need ultra-lightweight open-ear headphones designed specifically for safety and comfort during active use like running or commuting, choose iClever OWS01.
These two devices solve completely different problems for the same active lifestyle, and confusing them is a common mistake. The Avantree SP850 is a standalone audio source that sits on your handlebar or in your hand, while the iClever OWS01 is a wearable accessory that connects to your phone. Understanding this fundamental difference is the only way to make the right call for your next ride.
• Avantree SP850: Best for users who need a dedicated, self-contained audio device with FM radio and SD card playback without needing a phone connection nearby; its trade-off is that it is not a headset and requires a separate pair of earbuds or headphones for personal listening.
• iClever OWS01: Best for users seeking a safe, comfortable, and secure fit for their ears during high-movement activities with air conduction technology; its trade-off is that it relies entirely on Bluetooth connectivity and has no internal storage or radio tuner.
• Who picks Avantree: Cyclists who want a robust, all-in-one station for music and news that doesn't drain their phone's battery or require pairing every time they start riding.
• Who picks iClever: Commuters and athletes who prioritize situational awareness, sweat resistance, and an ergonomic fit that stays put without blocking the ear canal.
The Avantree SP850 is built for the cyclist who treats their bike as a mobile command center. This device is a portable 3-in-1 unit that combines an FM radio, a Bluetooth speaker, and an MP3 player via SD card into a single, compact chassis. Its primary strength lies in its independence from a smartphone. You do not need to pair your phone to listen to the local news or your favorite stations; the unit handles the tuning itself using auto-scan or numeric keys. This makes it an excellent companion for long rides where you might not want to fiddle with a phone screen or worry about your battery dying before you get home.
The design focuses on clarity and portability rather than massive volume. With a maximum output power of 2 watts and dimensions of roughly 5.12 inches by 1.26 inches by 2.6 inches, it fits easily in a jersey pocket or hangs securely on a handlebar mount. The LED display provides visual feedback for station selection and battery status, which is crucial when you are glancing down quickly while navigating traffic. The frequency response is tuned for clear voice reproduction, making it ideal for listening to talk radio, podcasts, or news updates where intelligibility matters more than deep bass.
However, this device is not a headphone. It is a speaker designed for personal listening in close range. If you are looking for something to wear directly on your head, this is not it. You would need to plug in a separate pair of wired headphones via the 3.5mm jack or connect wireless earbuds via Bluetooth to hear the audio privately. Furthermore, it does not have the open-ear design required for total situational awareness if you rely solely on the speaker for external sounds. It is best suited for the rider who wants a reliable, rechargeable (using USB) audio hub that can run on a replaceable CR5 battery backup if needed, ensuring you never miss a broadcast even if your phone dies.

The iClever OWS01 takes a completely different approach, targeting the user who prioritizes safety and comfort above all else. As an open-ear, air conduction headphone, it leaves your ear canals completely open. This design allows ambient sounds—like car horns, other cyclists, or traffic noise—to pass through naturally while you listen to your music or podcasts. For anyone concerned about hearing what is happening around them while moving, this feature is non-negotiable. The device uses soft TPE material and a memory steel wire structure that allows for 360-degree bending, ensuring a secure fit that adapts to various head sizes without squeezing or causing pain.
Its weight is a standout feature, clocking in at just 0.8 ounces. This ultra-light profile means you can wear them for extended periods without fatigue, a common complaint with traditional over-ear or heavy in-ear models. The audio drivers are 14.2mm dynamic units equipped with Dynamic Range Control (DRC) technology, which aims to provide rich, detailed sound with enhanced bass without sacrificing the natural air conduction experience. The inclusion of Bluetooth 5.4 ensures a fast, stable connection to modern smartphones and tablets, allowing for seamless streaming without the lag or dropouts often associated with older wireless standards.
Safety is also engineered into the hardware with a volume limit set between 74 and 85 dBA, protecting the eardrums from damage during prolonged exposure. This makes it particularly suitable for younger riders or those sensitive to loud noises. However, because it lacks any internal storage or radio tuner, it is entirely dependent on a paired device. If your phone is dead, silent, or out of reach, the headphones are useless. There is no headphone jack for wired backups, and no SD card slot. It is purely a wireless receiver that demands a constant stream of data from your phone or another Bluetooth source.
• Best for Battery Independence → Avantree SP850: Since it has its own rechargeable battery and FM tuner, you can listen to radio without draining your phone's power or needing a Bluetooth connection.
• Best for Situational Awareness → iClever OWS01: The open-ear design ensures you can hear traffic and surroundings clearly, a critical safety factor for road cycling.
• Best for Secure Fit During Movement → iClever OWS01: The flexible memory steel wire and ergonomic three-point pressure system keep the headphones locked in place during vigorous pedaling.
• Best for Multi-Source Playback Without Phone → Avantree SP850: You can play MP3s directly from an SD card or tune into local FM stations without needing a smartphone nearby.
• Best for Long-Session Comfort → iClever OWS01: Weighing only 0.8 oz, these are significantly lighter than most headsets and won't cause neck strain or ear soreness over hours of use.
• Best for Voice Clarity in Noise → Avantree SP850: The 2-watt speaker is tuned for balanced audio and clear voice reproduction, perfect for following sports commentary or news broadcasts.
• Best for Modern Connectivity → iClever OWS01: Equipped with Bluetooth 5.4, it offers faster pairing and better stability with newer devices compared to standard Bluetooth versions.
• Best for Durability Against Elements → Avantree SP850: Its plastic enclosure and compact size make it easy to store in pockets or bags, protected from the elements when not in use.
For the specific use case of cycling, I would personally buy the iClever OWS01. While the Avantree SP850 is a fantastic piece of gear for stationary listening or casual rides where you can manage a separate pair of earbuds, the iClever OWS01 solves the biggest risk of all: safety. Being able to hear a car approaching from behind while enjoying your playlist is invaluable. The open-ear design eliminates the "tunnel vision" effect of noise-canceling headphones, and the featherlight build means I barely notice them until I'm done riding. If you are looking for the best wireless bluetooth headphones for cycling where safety and comfort are paramount, the iClever OWS01 is the superior choice.
It works well for listening to music from a connected phone or SD card, but since it is a speaker and not a headset, you must use additional headphones for private listening. It is best used as a central audio source rather than a wearable device.
Yes, the flexible memory steel wire allows the back-hanging part to bend 360 degrees without deformation, creating a secure fit that accommodates various head shapes and movements typical of cycling.
No, the device relies entirely on Bluetooth 5.4 for audio transmission and has no internal storage, radio tuner, or auxiliary input jack to play audio independently.
The iClever OWS01 is safer because its open-ear design keeps your ear canals open to ambient environmental sounds, whereas the Avantree SP850 is a speaker that requires you to wear separate headphones to block out the world for private listening.
