Perspective of the Twilight
Tongues (Holy Rollers) depicts a Pentecostal Church. There is ecstatic worship through the movements presented in the painting. The warm hues and emphasis on skin tones create a celebrating atmosphere of invitation and inclusion. During this time of the Harlem Renaissance there was new musical forms such as gospel music being created, and also captured in art works such as this.
The painting captures an actual place referred to as, "The Stroll." This was Black Chicago's commercial and amusement district. There is a crowd of people in the foreground and background. There is a sense of individuality in each character because of their actions and body postures within the frame. The painting takes on vibrant African American nightlife unapologetically.
Cocktails is used to express social class and status head on. There are soft pink tones in the walls and floorings of the room. The majority of the women are also wearing different shades of pink. One woman is wearing white, while another is wearing green. In the middle, all of the women are chatting and having cocktails in the middle of the day. This infers that the women have time to enjoy the leisure. There is a black butler ready to serve them. These details all distinguish between each character. On the back wall, there is also a portrait which requires a certain social status.
