I found Automotive Grade Linux , which is an open-source project based on Linux for automotive applications. This (German) news article says that you have to pay money to be a member of AGL. However, I can't find out the licence of the project and what it means to be a member: Do you need to be a member to use the code legally? Is this membership only required for commercial usage, so mainly for car manufacturers?

I'm trying to build automotive grade linux, but I keep getting the same errors.

I tried building on different machines with different linux distributions, but I keep getting the error nevertheless.

I also tried building for different machines without success.

Future versions will expand to more comprehensive digital cockpit and assisted driving technology. Several Linux-friendly, automotive focused system-on-chips that span all these applications have been announced in recent months, including the Intel Atom A3900, Renesas Electronics R-Car H3, and NXP i.MX8 Quad (see farther below).

TI also plays a big role in automotive IVI with its Jacinto 6 SoCs. Nvidia, meanwhile, has pivoted the bulk of its Tegra development resources toward automotive, including its Drive PX 2 solution for self-driving cars.

NXP recently announced an automotive-focused i.MX8 Quad SoC with four Cortex-A53 cores, two Cortex-M4F cores, and two GPUs. Upcoming QuadPlus and QuadMax versions will add one or two -A72 cores, respectively.

All these platforms support Linux, which is increasingly well positioned in automotive against its two main rivals: QNX and Microsoft Windows Embedded Automotive. It remains unclear to what extent Google will turn Android Auto into a full automotive spec like AGL or GENIVI. Last January at CES, Google announced an Open Automotive Alliance with Audi, GM, Honda, Hyundai, and Nvidia, to standardize Android IVI systems.

It works great with Automotive Grade Linux, so building an AGL image is one easy way to get started. If your planned project is automotive, AGL is a great choice to start out with. Yocto is a set of tools, templates and methods for building Linux systems from scratch. Automotive Grade Linux is a complete Linux distribution designed for in-car systems. It includes base system layers from Poky and OpenEmbedded, board support layers for popular automotive platforms, and quite a lot more.

Many other manufacturers work together and with the Linux Foundation, suppliers, and tech companies on Automotive Grade Linux. By not having to build a new version of Linux from scratch, each manufacturer saves on costs and can get products to market faster. By using Linux, they have the ability to make customizations themselves as needed as well, but have a good automotive-optimized starting point. While they started with infotainment systems, AGL is now being used for other automotive applications, including instrument cluster, heads-up-display (HUD), telematics/ connected car, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), functional safety, and autonomous driving systems.

Jeffrey "Jefro" Osier-Mixon is a Senior Principal Community Architect within the Office of the CTO at Red Hat, focusing on the automotive and energy industry verticals. A 30-year industry veteran, he worked at the Linux Foundation on RISC-V and LF Energy and at Intel Corporation on a number of open source projects, including the Yocto Project, Zephyr Project, and Project ACRN.

The benefits of open-source software have been obvious to tens of thousands of developers for a long time. It is less expensive than proprietary software and benefits from large communities of developers who strive to make it better. The Linux open-source operating system is widely used in infotainment but not at all in automotive safety-critical systems, with the exception of Tesla, whose full-self- driving system runs on Linux, according to reports. "It's public knowledge that they have been using Linux for years," said Shuah Khan, a Linux Foundation Fellow and chair of the ELISA Technical Steering Committee. The ELISA (Enabling Linux in Safety Applications) project is an open-source initiative that aims to create a shared set of tools and processes to help companies build and certify Linux-based safety-critical applications.

Developers who might be inclined to base their safety-critical systems on Linux but are stymied by the safety certification process should consider joining ELISA's automotive working group. Khan wants to hear from developers who are reluctant to use Linux. "They should come tell us what is stopping them, and then engage and collaborate with the ELISA members to find solutions." Automotive members include Toyota, BMW, Aisin, SAIC, Elektrobit and the Automotive Grade Linux collaboration. Earlier this year three Chinese members joined the ELISA collaboration: Automotive Intelligence and Control of China (AICC), Lotus NYO, and ZTE.
