Canada is known to have harsh weather conditions, whether it be summers or winters. Especially during winter seasons, people face huge snow problems. People owning a house particularly are the most affected ones.
After a snowfall, people tend to encounter problems like slippage on ice and tend to hurt themselves. Even if the snow is shoveled off the house driveway, the thin black ice layer accumulates on the surface which doesn’t dissolve very easily. Such a layer is generally regarded as black-ice that forms due to sudden melting and re-freezing of snow crystals. This thin layer of ice is very difficult to remove from the driveway as it firmly freezes on the asphalt surface and forms a layer that cannot be removed easily using normal tools like a snow shovel.
One solution to this problem of black-ice formation is that salt is immediately sprinkled on the surface as soon as the snowfall begins. Such a practice reduces the formation of black ice significantly, and hence prevents harmful accidents like sudden slippage.
Although the traditional method of manually sprinkling the salt crystals by a person is almost perfect but could be improved to a degree where their is no human involvement. Reason for making this project is that is closely focuses on automation of such a practice.
For example, during an overnight snowfall, it is very difficult for a person to determine the time of snowfall and right away sprinkle the salt. This project focuses on solving such a problem. The basic working of the system is that on detecting the snowfall, salt crystals will automatically be sprinkled on the driveway , in an evenly manner while closely considering the obstacles like a parked car or a moving pedestrian.
