SUV's are very famous due to it's spaciousness and rough & tough look gives the pride to driver/owner.
SUVs first rolled on to the scene in the Seventies and Eighties, although it took a while for them to be referred to as SUVs. These cars were fitted with four-wheel drive, and were built for rugged and outdoorsy lifestyle. They usually had a huge interior matched with a huge boot, or even a pick-up bed in the back, hence the utility name. But they were supposed to be more car-like to drive than a truck, which is where the sport comes from.
But the sports in the name also refers to the aspirational lifestyle that comes with SUV ownership. Surfboards, skis, and pretty much whatever other lifestyle activity you had planned could be thrown in the back.
And in 2018, the term SUV can still be applied to big and rugged cars capable of scaling different terrains, such as the Toyota Land Cruiser or Range Rover. But since the SUV's entrance into the general public's knowledge, its applications have changed. Smaller, less rugged, but easier to live with vehicles, like the Vauxhall Mokka X, and Honda HR-V are often referred to as SUVs too. However, these are really crossovers. They’re a bit like an SUV, but smaller and less capable off-road. Think of them as more like a tall hatchback than an SUV.
Nissan X-Trail 3rd Generation new version is also a crossover type but it's built with selectable 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive which gives the pleasure of driving as a normal vehicle on city roads and on 4-wheel on rough / off-roads, well who knows when to drive on a muddy road or a nearby beach road.
A common misconception is that an SUV and a 4x4 are the same. While they are similar, SUVs aren’t always four wheel drive. Not all SUVs are 4x4s, and not all 4x4s are SUVs. Some SUVs, like the Toyota C-HR and RAV4, are also available in front wheel drive (FWD). The Land Cruiser is a 4x4 as standard.
A 4x4 is a car in which the power from the engine can be distributed to all 4 wheels. An SUV, however, is most often defined by the build, design and purpose of the car.
