First off, I work in our Engineering department, not Survey. I have a some survey experience, but its been a real long time since I have worked with description keys and such. We believe our survey group can enhance the way they show trees, so I heading the efforts to revamp that, but I need to have a clear way to show them what we want and how it works. Run through a few drawings to make sure we are happy, then forward my finding to survey to implement.

We have our trees coded like "D1 12 OAK". In the Description Keys the "12" is parameter 1 and the block for deciduous gets scaled by that parameter 1 in the XY direction. You would need to create your tree block to the right size where multiplying it by 12 gets you the diameter you want to end up with.

TRPALM 24 24 PALM

We some different tree trunk symbols for some of the trees, we also add a tree canopy block after import, canopy lines are plotted with a dot linetype, slightly screened so they don't stomp on other items. A legend also gets plotted.

If you make the block correctly, you scale it like the poster above wrote,

The problem: Sometimes, in our office, far too much time is spent having to go through and re-scale tree symbols. We don't use a typical tree symbol. We use multi-attribute tree blocks that represent the center of the tree, canopy size (scalable), root protection zone (scalable), and the tree ID#. See the attached picture for a visual of the deciduous tree block.

What I'm looking to do is be able to import the points for the trees, auto-assign a symbol based on tree type (typically only deciduous or coniferous), and then auto-scale the canopy and root zone attributes. Unfortunately the root zone and canopy size are completely unrelated. The canopy size is recorded simply as a foot-diameter value, while the root zone is a factor of trunk size (Trunk size is recorded in inches. Root zone is a 1.5 scale factor of the trunk size but represented in feet. ie- 6 inch trunk = 9 foot root zone).

Ideally: The tree canopy hatch and marker (black squigly line along canopy) scale with the canopy line. The root zone scales separately from the canopy. The Tree ID#, Center marker (x), and Green canopy marker (green squigly line) all DO NOT scale at all.

Not sure how to do all of this, but the root zone vs trunk diameter seems simple. If the root zone is always 1.5 x the tree diameter in inches but noted in feet, that's the same as tree diameter x18 (1.5 x 12) so just add that to your base block as circle (assume your base trunk diameter is 1/12 (1") foot with a 1.5 (18") foot circle).

For the canopy, I have never tried this, perhaps 2 description key codes with 2 blocks? One for the trunk & root zone scaled using the trunk diameter and the second for the canopy using the canopy parameter.

My field code (description) is TR 15 10 0.8 which is 15 for height, 10 for canopy and 0.8 is for trunk dia. I work in metres. In my description key set I have two codes though. TR for tree and UNK for trunk. In the description key set, the different codes are set to scale on the correct parameter needed and use the correct symbol needed

After completing the survey I will export all the data to a csv (Point, Easting,Northing,RL, Code Att1 Att 2 Att3. Then sort by code and cutout all the trees to a separate csv. Then copy all the trees and paste into the cells below the last tree shot (within the same csv). Then change to copied cells code to UNK. So now I have a csv with all the trees twice except half are called TR the other half called UNK.

I am rendering a site plan where I have same tree repeated over and over again in autocad. Those trees are as simple circles as blocks in autocad. This means that if I change the radius of one circle, all the tree circles change automatically of that particular instance.

. Now, I want to replace those circles in photoshop with tree. Replacing them one by one is taking time. Is there a quick way to replace autocad block trees of autocad in photoshop with a different tree jpeg so that work time is saved?

Here's a block (units = inches) that may be useful in the future, along with the image that is xref-ed into it. If you want to use it, put the image file where you keep your xref's. It is a simple tree dynamic block. copyclip it to one of your drawings. Each inserted image of a dynamic block can be adjusted individually once inserted, and this one is very simple to make yourself. Note that the circle in the block is on a NO PLOT layer, so you won't see it in print. You can also turn that layer off so you won't see the circle in modelspace. I can't do anything about the background, but you won't see it on white paper or pdf. Just make sure that anything that needs to be seen through the backgraound is draworder'ed above the tree.

Insert the block >> then select the block >> then click on the LEFTMOST grip >> Then type in a number of units for the radius of the tree image. The next one can have a different radius, and so on... Tht's what makes it dynamic.

I found a very natural looking tree block once in a dwg by a company that shall remain nameless but has a real big amusement park in Orlando FL. It brought my Video processor to its knees. The block had close to 500 nested "branch" blocks, each with 1000 or so nested leaf blocks made of closed plines. It was an elevation view tree. I tried your technique on it to make it more usable. Exploded, exploded exploded for awhile to get them all, then ran overkill, which erased almost 100,000 overlapping entities. from now on my trees will look like this.

We had the same a branch, then blocked, copied then blocked, then copied about 5 times got it down to 1 block versus 4. We could not change its colour trees are green expect in winter for desciduous trees.

im not sure if autocad has a command to find references, but they are driving me crazy. particularly the one that has the old company name in it, because it is unprofessional when we share our dwg's with other companies.

edit to save you all some time. i know how to do quick select and i know how to purge. these arent orpaned or nested blocks. if i erase all layouts and go to model space, select all and erase all, the blocks are still unable to be purged...

This AutoCAD library includes 43 AutoCAD tree blocks. This CAD block library is compatible back to AutoCAD 2000. Most of the styles have a version that includes shading for more of that 3D hand drawn look. Check out the previews to see all the styles.

Add attributes to your title blocks to customize your document information. Attributes allow you to add customized metadata to your files and folders, so you can add important project-specific details. For more details, see Customize Documents with Attributes.

This is a very nice assortment of CAD trees in elevation view. There are several different types and styles of trees included. This AutoCAD library of tree blocks includes 37 CAD tree blocks. This CAD block library is compatible with all versions of AutoCAD from 2015 back to version 2000. 2351a5e196
