Privacy Policy for Subtitle Translator for Skillshare
Effective date: October 13, 2026
Subtitle Translator for Skillshare has one purpose: translating a user-selected Skillshare caption track into a user-selected target language and displaying it during video playback.
Data the extension handles
The extension processes the following data locally on the user's device:
- Caption text from the Skillshare lesson currently being watched.
- Caption timing information required to synchronize translated subtitles.
- User settings such as enabled state, display mode, font size, overlay position, background opacity, prefetch window, and cache limit.
- Translated caption text stored in a bounded local cache.
How data is used
Caption text is used only to provide the extension's subtitle translation feature. Chrome's built-in Translator API performs translation on the user's device. Settings and cached translations are stored locally using Chrome extension storage and IndexedDB.
Data transmission and sharing
The extension does not send caption text, browsing activity, settings, or translated text to the developer, an analytics provider, an advertising provider, or any other third party. The extension has no developer-operated backend and includes no analytics, advertising, tracking, or telemetry.
Chrome may download language models needed by its built-in Translator API. Those downloads are controlled by Chrome, not by this extension.
Data retention and deletion
Settings remain on the device until they are changed or the extension is removed. The translation cache is automatically limited by the configured maximum number of entries. Users can delete the cache at any time from the extension's Settings page. Removing the extension deletes its extension-owned local data according to Chrome's storage behavior.
Permissions
The extension requests only:
- `storage`, to retain user settings locally.
- `activeTab`, to communicate with the current Skillshare tab after the user opens the extension popup.
- Access to Skillshare pages through a narrowly scoped content-script match, to read captions and display translated subtitles.
The extension does not request access to cookies, browsing history, downloads, identity, location, or all websites.
Limited Use
Use of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data is used only to provide and improve the extension's single user-facing purpose and is not sold, transferred for advertising, or used for creditworthiness or lending purposes.
Changes
Material changes to this policy will be reflected by updating the effective date and the publicly available policy before the changed data practice is introduced.
