People with disabilities are often placed in institutions. This has been done for centuries. Some people think this is the only place they can get proper care. This has resulted in much mistreatment, segregation, and trauma. Institutions are not as common as they once were. Many of the most well known institutions in America are no longer around. This includes Willowbrook and Pennehurst. Institutions still exist in many different forms. A lot of harm is still done in them.

Autistic people are among some of the people who are institutionalized. Many have written about their experiences in them. Readers may find this content disturbing.
