Getting started
How do I add an account? On the website or app you want to protect, turn on two-step verification (also called 2FA) and choose "authenticator app". Then tap + in Authenticator and scan the QR code, or enter the setup key by hand. Type the 6-digit code from Authenticator back on the website to finish.
How do I move my accounts from Google Authenticator? In Google Authenticator, open the menu and choose Transfer accounts › Export accounts. In Authenticator, go to Import › Transfer QR codes and scan each QR code in order. You will see the list before anything is added. Your accounts stay in Google Authenticator too.
Can I import from other apps? Yes. Choose Import › File for unencrypted exports from 2FAS, Aegis, Raivo and andOTP, or text files with otpauth links. You can also import QR codes from a photo or screenshot. Encrypted backups from other apps can't be read yet; export them without encryption first and delete that file afterwards.
The QR code won't scan. Make sure the whole code is inside the frame and the screen is bright. If the code is on another screen, scan it directly with the camera instead of a screenshot. You can always enter the setup key manually.
Codes not working
The website says my code is wrong.
1. Make sure your iPhone's time is set automatically: Settings › General › Date & Time › Set Automatically. Time-based codes depend on the correct time.
2. If Authenticator shows a clock warning on the Codes screen, tap Fix the drift.
3. Use the code before its timer runs out. If only a few seconds are left, wait for the next code.
4. Check that you are using the right account. If you have several accounts for the same service, open the account to see its name.
5. If the account was added with special settings (8 digits, 60 seconds or SHA-256), check them in the account's Edit › Advanced screen against what the website gave you.
A counter-based (HOTP) code doesn't work. Tap New code only when the website asks for a code. Each tap moves the counter forward; if it gets too far ahead, the website may need you to set up the account again.
Backups and moving to a new iPhone
How do I back up my accounts?
iCloud backup (Authenticator Plus): go to Settings › iCloud backup and turn it on. Your data is encrypted on your iPhone before it is uploaded to your private iCloud. It needs iCloud Keychain to be turned on to open on another device.
File backup: go to Settings › Export encrypted file to create a backup file protected with a password you choose, and save it to Files or another safe place. Keep the password safe; it cannot be recovered.
Recovery codes: also save the recovery codes each website gives you when you turn on 2FA. You can store them in Authenticator's Notes.
I'm moving to a new iPhone.
If you use Quick Start or restore from an encrypted iPhone backup (iCloud or Mac/PC), your accounts move with it.
With iCloud backup: on the new iPhone, sign in with the same Apple Account, install Authenticator and choose Restore from backup.
Without a backup: on your old iPhone, open Tools › Transfer to another device and scan the transfer QR codes with the new iPhone.
Keep your old iPhone until you have checked that the codes work on the new one.
Can I use my accounts on several devices? Yes. Restore the same iCloud backup, or scan the transfer QR codes, on each device. The codes are the same on every device.
App lock and deleted accounts
How do I lock the app? Go to Settings › Lock & Face ID, create a passcode and turn on Face ID or Touch ID. You can also choose when the app locks automatically.
I forgot my app passcode. For your security the passcode can't be recovered. On the lock screen, tap Forgot passcode and confirm with your iPhone passcode to reset the app, then restore your accounts from your iCloud or file backup. Without a backup, accounts on this iPhone can't be brought back, so you will need each website's recovery codes.
I deleted an account by mistake. Deleted accounts and notes stay in Settings › Recently deleted for 30 days. Open it and tap Restore. After 30 days they are deleted permanently.
Before you remove an account, turn off two-step verification on that website or make sure you have another way to sign in. Deleting it from Authenticator doesn't change anything on the website.
AutoFill, widgets and Siri
How do I fill codes automatically? (Authenticator Plus, iOS 18 or later)
1. Go to Settings › iOS integrations › AutoFill in Authenticator and tap Turn on AutoFill, then allow it. You can also turn it on in iPhone Settings › General › AutoFill & Passwords › Verification Codes.
2. Add the website to each account: open the account and tap Website, or use the Website missing list on the AutoFill screen.
3. When a website asks for a code, tap the suggestion above the keyboard. Face ID or your iPhone passcode is asked first if Face ID before filling is on.
If no suggestion appears, check that the account has the exact website (for example accounts.example.com is covered by example.com ). For sites without a match, tap the key icon above the keyboard and pick the account from the list.
Why don't widgets show my codes? For your security, codes never appear on the Home Screen, Lock Screen, Live Activities or in Siri. Widgets show your accounts and open the app; the code is shown after you unlock Authenticator.
Can I hide account names on widgets and Siri? Yes. Turn off Account names in iOS in Settings › iOS integrations. Widgets and Siri will show "Account 1, Account 2" instead.
Authenticator Plus
What does Plus include? Unlimited accounts, iCloud backup, encrypted file backup and export, bulk import, widgets, Live Activities and AutoFill. The free version includes one account.
I paid but Plus isn't active. Go to Settings › Restore purchases. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account you used to subscribe and that you are online.
How do I cancel? Open iPhone Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions, choose Authenticator and tap Cancel Subscription, or use Settings › Manage subscription in the app. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.
What happens to my accounts if I cancel? Nothing is deleted and your codes keep working. Plus features stop at the end of the period you paid for.
How do I get a refund? Payments are handled by Apple. Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Privacy and your data
Can you see my accounts or codes? No. Codes are generated on your iPhone, and your setup keys, notes and backups never reach us. Backups are encrypted on your device before they are saved.
How do I delete all my data? Go to Settings › Erase all data. This deletes your accounts, notes, settings and this iPhone's iCloud backup. Make sure you have turned off two-step verification on your websites or have another way to sign in first.
