Mesopotamia is often considered the birthplace of major ancient civilizations like Babylon, Sumer, and Assyria. The name "Mesopotamia," which was given to the region by the Greeks, literally means "in the middle of rivers" to refer to its location.
Significant Achievements
The most significant achievement of ancient Mesopotamians was the invention of writing by the Sumerians. This innovation led to the creation of the first recorded laws, known as Hammurabi's Code, as well as the earliest major work of literature, the Epic of Gilgamesh.
Mesopotamian (mainly Iraqi) Australians are Australian citizens of Iraqi descent. Since the 1991 Gulf War, thousands of Iraqis have sought refuge in Australia. As of June 2022, there were 104,170 Iraqi-born individuals living in Australia.
