In 2025, Australia competed in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) for the first time. The event was held in Mumbai, India. The team did very well with one of the students winning a silver medal.
Building on the momentum of competing in 2025, Australia is planning to send a team to the IOAA 2026 (Vietnam) and IOAA 2026 Junior (Thailand). The teams were selected from Australia's first Astronomy Olympiad held in February 2026 and have undergone training through an online course and a Winter School.
Australia's first Space and Astronomy Olympiad Winter School was held from 4 July to 7 July 2026 in Melbourne. The Winter School was hosted at the University of Melbourne and Swinburne University and featured lectures from leading astronomy academics, observational practicals, advanced workshops on astrophysics and a visit to Swinburne University's Virtual Reality Theatre.
Australia is planning on holding its second Space and Astronomy Olympiad in February 2027, with plans to send Senior and Junior Teams to the IOAA 2027. Registration for the Olympiad is currently closed and will open closer to the date.
