About

Austin S. Matthews, Ph.D.

Welcome!

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at East Carolina University, also affiliated with the university's Security Studies program.

My research focuses on authoritarian regimes, elite politics, and regime change. I take a mixed methods approach, combining large-observation quantitative analyses with robust investigations of historical episodes. Many of my projects rely on original data hand-collected from a wide range of primary and secondary source materials.

My work has been published in Armed Forces & Society, the British Journal of Political Science, Communist and Post-Communist Studies, Democratization, Electoral Politics, German Politics, International Interactions Journal of Contemporary China, Journal of Conflict Resolution, and the Journal of Peace Research.

My teaching portfolio covers courses on comparative politics, international relations, and research methods. I have taught in-person seminars and asynchronous online courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
