SNAP Benefits (Food Stamps)

What is it? SNAP is a federally funded program that helps low-income families buy nutritious food from local food stores. SNAP assistance is available to qualifying families, elderly people, and single adults. Applicants must reside in Texas, and must apply in the county in which they reside. It comes in the form of a Lone Star Card and can be used at qualifying stores. Most adults ages 18-49 with no children in their home can get SNAP for only three months in a three-year period.
Who is Eligible? You must be a resident of the state of Texas and meet one of the following requirements:
You have a current bank balance (savings and checking combined) under $2,001, or
You have a current bank balance (savings and checking combined) under $3,001 who share their household with one of the following:
A person or persons age 60 and over or
A person with a disability (a child, your spouse, a parent, or yourself).
General Work Requirements:
Registering for work;
Not voluntarily quitting a job or reducing hours;
Taking a job if offered; and
Participating in employment and training programs, if assigned by the state.

Texas Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
What is it? A nutrition program that helps pregnant women, new mothers, and young children eat well, learn about nutrition, and stay healthy. Nutrition education and counseling, nutritious foods, and assistance with access to health care are provided to low-income women, infants, and children through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program, popularly known as WIC.
Who is Eligible? To be eligible for this benefit program, you must be a resident of Texas and one of the following: Pregnant, or Breastfeeding, or Postpartum, or A child 5 years old or younger. (Fathers also qualify!) Click here for a pre-screening tool.
A person who participates or has family members participate in certain other benefit programs, such as SNAP, Medicaid, or TANF, automatically meets the income eligibility requirement.
