I have built countless model rockets in my childhood. I started off by building kits, but I eventually wanted to experiment with different model rocket designs. I built model rockets out of pringles cans, 2 liter soda bottles, and Large cardboard tubes. Many of my homemade rockets were failures, but they always taught me something about what I needed to do better the next time.

After a while of building rockets and launching them with standard rocket engines, I decided to experiment with creating my own solid fuel rocket engines. I made several iterations of a basic sugar and potassium nitrate rocket engine with different ratios. They were not very powerful, but they were fun to make!

Hybrid Rocket Engine
This is my attempt to create a hybrid rocket engine when I was in high school. I was able to create a rocket engine that can be throttled or completely shut off by the turn of a valve. This type of rocket engine is significantly less complex than a liquid fueled rocket engine, but more powerful and safe than a solid fuel rocket engine. It is fueled by an acrylic body that is burning away and the oxidizer is air which traveled through a hole which was bored all the way through the acrylic body. The nozzle was just a very basic hole cut into the plate, but if I revisit this project I plan to experiment with different nozzle designs to get as much thrust as I can.

This is my liquid rocket engine design. It used off the shelf components and very little machining was required. I was bored during the summer time so I picked up this project to keep me occupied after work. I bought and read a liquid fueled rocket engine design textbook to help guide me through the process of designing something that was very new to me. If I was to revisit it today, I would employ my computational fluid dynamics (CFD) skills to compare my design against other published results and make changes. It hasn't been manufactured because I haven't had the time, but I hope that in the future, I will be able to pick it up where I left off and collect some experimental data.
