Audition FAQ
When are string auditions?
Auditions are May & August every year for our year long programs (all orchestras besides Prelude). Auditions happen in person at Austin High School. Audition requirements will be posted on our website by February 1st.
When are band auditions?
Applications are accepted May through December for our full orchestras- Philharmonic and Symphony. Band members are selected by teacher recommendation and TMEA placement.
Am I expected to be a part of my school's band/orchestra program?
AYO requires all students to be enrolled in their school's music program if they have one.
Which orchestra should I audition for?
Read through ensemble descriptions here. With your director or private teacher's help, make a decision based on years of experience playing in an ensemble and audition requirements for each orchestra. You will be placed in the appropriate ensemble based on your playing abilities demonstrated in the audition.
In order to have a productive ensemble rehearsal, age limitations are set by school grade level. If your skill level doesn't coincide with the age range of the orchestra, please contact AYO admin. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
Do I need to have my audition music memorized?
Memorization is not necessary for auditions.
When & how can I apply for financial aid?
After you are accepted into AYO, please contact admin for a need-based financial aid form. Scholarships are limited.
What is the tuition?
Tuition for the current season is $400 for the entire year.
If you're a band member joining during Spring semester, tuition is $200.
