This month's writing workshop is taking a different approach. Instead of our traditional workshop format, we're bringing together four experienced voices in the slam poetry world for a panel discussion covering the craft, culture, and career of competitive spoken word.
Whether you're preparing for your first slam or looking to take the next step in your poetry journey, this conversation offers insight from poets who have spent years building successful careers both on and off the stage.
Christopher Michael – Slam Strategy
A nationally recognized slam poet, coach, and competitor, Christopher Michael has spent years studying what makes poems connect with audiences and judges. He'll share insight on competition strategy, crafting effective performances, reading the room, and making smart decisions on stage.
Mr. Dave – The Slam Community
A longtime pillar of the Austin slam scene, Mr. Dave has helped cultivate spaces where poets can grow, compete, and connect. He'll discuss the culture of slam, building relationships within the community, and finding your place in the movement.
Danny Strack – Publishing
A poet and author with experience bringing spoken word from the stage to the page, Danny Strack will discuss the publishing process, turning your work into books, and how poets can expand their reach beyond live performance.
SC Says – Touring
An accomplished touring poet who has performed across the country, SC Says will share insight into the realities of life on the road, booking shows, building an audience, and creating a sustainable career as a performing artist.
Bring your questions. There will be time for audience Q&A following the discussion.
