According to a report from the British Coffee Association, around 95 million cups of coffee are consumed daily in the UK, which totals approximately 2.8 billion cups annually. Over the last decade, coffee consumption has shown a consistent upward trend, with an average annual growth rate of 3%.
In terms of environmental impact, data from Google indicates that the UK uses about 16 billion disposable paper cups each year. This staggering figure results in the felling of approximately 6.5 million trees and requires around 18 billion liters of water. Additionally, the energy consumed for this process is enough to power 50,000 homes for an entire year.
A significant challenge with disposable paper cups is their plastic coating, which hinders direct recycling efforts. The takeaway sector contributes similarly to plastic waste through plastic-lined paper products that ultimately end up in landfills. A Parliamentary report highlights that only about 1 in every 400 cups is recycled.
In response to these environmental concerns, the UK government is advancing initiatives aimed at banning plastic cutlery and cups. This movement underscores the urgent need for alternative packaging solutions as society progresses toward meeting United Nations sustainability targets and evolving product designs.
According to beer sales data from 2020, our calculations indicate that by repurposing BSG, we could potentially save 1.6 million trees and generate enough energy to power 12,500 homes annually.Â
