Our Summit's Journey
As the Auraria Campus celebrates the 16th Annual Latinx Leadership Summit, we honor the founding of the United Farm Workers Movement; We commemorate the tireless and non-violent organizing efforts of Co-Founders, Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta; and We honor the more than 50 years of struggle by recognizing those in our Latinx/a/o Community who have lived out and endured the struggle.
The Latinx Leadership Summit began 16 years ago to offer Auraria students the opportunity to develop their leadership from a Latinx/a/o cultural perspective. From its inception, representatives from CCD, MSUD and UCD believed it was important to maintain solidarity and unity by ensuring that the summit would be equally representative of the three institutions on Auraria Campus.
The first 3 years the conference was held during Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept/Oct) then it eventually “migrated” to be celebrated on Cesar Chavez’s Birthday March 31st to honor his Life, Legacy & Leadership. The day is filled with great speakers, workshops, activism, a march for peace and justice through campus and artistic presentations related to leadership designed to honor the spirit of Cesar Chavez and his influence in Leadership today.
