Aunt Goldie was my grandmother’s sister, which makes her my Great Aunt. I believe that I found my love of cooking from those two amazing ladies. As a small child, I remember the hardware store in Flint, Michigan that she and Uncle Ed owned. Aunt Goldie could talk tools, nuts and bolts with all the men, and even educate them on much more. She was quite the lady.
Eventually, they sold the store and moved out of the suburbs, which gave her time to enjoy her other passion, cooking. It was there that I remember her making this mustard. When my husband and I went to visit her, I spent time learning all of her tricks of the trade. As she was telling me this recipe, I scrambled for something to write on and found a receipt from our favorite central PA hardware store in my purse.
Since then, I have tweaked the recipe a little over the years to make it my own, but I have named it in her honor and with my love. To borrow from Julia Childs, “Bon appetit!”
